  • This is a game with which I am not familiar.

    We have a treasury of 123g, an income of 158g @ 70%tax and are building:
    11 Marketplaces
    A Temple
    A Library
    A Bank
    and a solitary camel
    If we reduce the tax rate to a more reasonable 20% - 8 of the cities currently building MPs cannot afford to keep them! (3 gold needed to break even and 4 to make a profit)
    We are 'researching' Astronomy at 30+ turns - the Greeks have it already and then some??

    OK - I readily admit that Democracy is not my favoured government, but surely this cannot be right ?

    Somebody needs a looong period of re-education at The Institute - perhaps it is I, but I don't think so....

    SG[1] for once sober, but totally bewildered!

    • 30 turns!!

      I see the leadership of our once proud nation has been overindulging in late nights, cheap booze and cheaper women.

      Whoever is next, your people must be your priority.

        8 turns is not enough turn to around a struggling democracy. One of the main powers of the democracy is the city growth. To do that we need temples for contentment, and marketplaces for celebrations. would you rather have a bunch of size 3 cities that aren't growing? Also notice that i did build a number of caravans that are intended to be used in trading to allow further growth (rushed them as the gold became available). With the state that i picked up the game, science was bad and getting worse. With larger cites brings more trade (ergo more science) and the ability to carry 2 gold worth of maintenance, not to mention larger caravan and freight bonuses. Once we have something resembling an infrastructure, we can quickly build more caravans as well as other units and actually use the trading power of the democracy.

          SCG - here is your chance for rebuttal and robust constructive criticism

          Seriously Tricky Game

          1020 = Change to largely caravan and diplomat production; Peace with Aztecs; Sell Temple in Magic Kingdom, buy Bank;

          1040 = Temple in Thunder Mountain; Bank in Magic Kingdom; much tickling and rushing;
          1060 = Greeks start Sun Tzu; Astronomy -> Sanitation (a hard choice, both Steam Engine & Monotheism are available);
          1080 = Harbour in Eurodisney; Greek catapult at the gates of Carribean pirate blown away - Greeks activate alliance with Aztecs - war;
          1100 = MarketPlace in Donald Duck; Who killed the Lighthouse? Caravels moving 3 is painful!
          1120 = Marco Polo's Embassy built in Magic Kingdom - no-one likes us - lots of tech out there; Striving for Sanitation;
          1140 = Musk in Caribean Pirate becomes vet seeing off Greek ellie; Walls in Caribean Pirate; Library in Tomorrowland; Wine, Matterhorn-Magic Kingdom, 18g; Salt, Tiki City-Magic Kingdom, 22g; Salt, Tomorowland-Magic Kingdom, 33g; The Institute founded;
          1160 = Sanitation -> Steam Engine; Salt, Neverneverland-Pharsalos, 46g; Bridge Building stolen from Pharsalos; Copper(d), Orlando-Atzcapotzalco, 92g; Beads, Space Mountain-Atzcapotzalco, 52g; Hides, Fantasia-Atzcapotzalco, 44g;
          1180 = Sanitation System built in Magic Kingdom(13 and growing); Colosseum in Anaheim; Silver, EuroDisney-Pharsalos, 50g;

          Well - I have played my eight turns in this unHoly form of government, perhaps neither wisely nor well - The Institute awaits the de(r/c)ision of my peers ...

          Good luck SG[1]

                        Got blindsided by RL this week (might even have a new GF ), so only half way through a responce to [1]'s post. Since I see he built a library in a non-SSC in the nothin' fancy game (marks it on his calendar ), don't think i'll post the whole thing.

                        Some of the highlights were that i left 11 active caravans and a nearly full science box, and 3 celebrating cities - one of which if i hadn't rushed the temple my last turn would probably still only be size 3, instead of size 5 and using 2 scientists. also, i left over 100 gold that could be used for deficit researching, which also allowed for discoveries.

                        I also wanted to point out that this is after all a conquest game, not an AC game, so we are going to need a lot of decent size cities (most likely obtained by celebrating) if we are going to a) conquer by military, or b) conquer by subversion. Caravans don't get built quickly if they don't either have production or gold to build them. And small cities don't bring the same trade bonuses of large ones.

                        And for my part, I probably could have started something better than a bank in Magic Kingdom, and I always forget to sell the superfluous improvements until i realize i need the extra gold that turn (temple in the shakes city in this case)

                        Anyway, on with the game

                        • Although it is sometimes unavoidable - I dislike committing the production of a city to the develpment of white goods. My style is to make the money and then rush the white goods in two turns - one set of shields and than buy - after all they are the cheapest shields out there at only 2g/shield - shields invested elsewhere in units or Wonders are worth far more. This basic strategy has served me well - but, of course, each to their own.

                          There was no offense intended, and I am glad to see that none was taken, so as you say,

                          "Anyway, on with the game "

                            it didn't say who it was, but by deduction it had to be either the french, aztecs or chinese. all three went after we did, and we didn't have embassies with any of them. The game did anounce that China had started adam smiths, so it couldn't have been anyone after that. Looking at [1]'s save, it couldn't have been the french, because they still didn't have it at that point. If [1] has the save from 1120, perhaps we could narrow it down exactly between the Aztecs and the Chinese?

                              • Usually when Admiral Puke follows the Rodent his first job is to arrange and count the bodies. When the Colosseum reaches overflow, Palace Square is often commandeered. On one occasion the Great Wall was used.

                                Puke's nostrils twitched as his Flagship dropped anchor. "Don't smell much rotting flesh today"
                                Instead he found a fledgling but flourishing democracy. His analysis of the situation went as follows:

                                With Magic Kingdom celebrating we have the makings of an empire. In two turns Steam Engine will be discovered. However, MPE reveals many white techs. We are way behind in science. With this in mind - when the advance allowing Ironclads is discovered, we will let the AI be our scientists! The Treasury needs a boost so the emphasis will be on tax. It takes no time to build a diplomat but many turns to reach a new discovery. If we slow our advance rate ... so will the other civs.
                                We are at war on a waterworld - Magellan's Expedition would add a little adrenaline to our Navy. Thinking further ahead JSB seems crucial for democratic conflicts.

                                1200 - Naval movements spotted south of SpaceMountain. Perhaps the enemy is nearer than we think!

                                1220 - Steam Engine -> Monotheism
                                Aztecs land near Tomorrowland (nearly renamed Yesterdayland) and kill caravan The attack is just repulsed.

                                1240 - Romans complete KRC - Indians change to MC.
                                Diplomat comes across Aztec terrorist base on the continent south of Tomorrowland.
                                Tzintzuntzen bribed for 291 (5 plundered) but Magnetism taken.

                                1260 - Silver to Magic Kingdom 45g

                                1280 - Diplomat stumbles across the secret of Feudalism in Mycenae Market

                                1300 - Athens completes Sun Tzu's War Academy. Indians develop Steam Engine but start working on Chivalry instead of Railroad

                                1320 - Romans land near Thunder Mountain. Their ellie bounces off the musk, who then kills a catapult. The Institute builds Temple.

                                1340 - Indians have nearly completed Mike's, The Romans nearly have SoL.
                                Magellan's Expedition in Magic Kingdom.
                                Bribe Aztec Musketeer who becomes a NON. The Senate supports continued action against the Aztecs. (Is Mr. Rodent the majority leader?)
                                Gems to MK = 58g. Garrisons in and around the capital strengthened.

                                Magic Kingdom = 21 and is still celebrating.
                                Population = 5.27m
                                Treasury = 485g.
