  • Historical note

Before modding Redfront 1.4 5+ years ago I actually spoke to Capt Nemo about it when he was still around.

We did 'briefly' discuss the idea's to make it better and more importantly remove/adjust things that a player could do to easily get to berlin prior to 44/45.

This was his concern and surprise that ppl figured out stuff in the scenario to circumvent the natural game play and thus 1.5 was created based on this.

Many of these idea's are present in RF 1.5 and thus RF 1.5 succeded in adding a year or two to the game.

Our goal should be to get the game right in TOT so that the player on average is in berlin in 45 and not before.

Nemo mentioned he planned to do redfront 1.5 to fix these things but left the scene after finishing West Front and gives his blessings to the community to use his scenarios for whatever.

If i was to tidy up RF1.5 I would do the following:

    - change the terrain to stop ships sailing into germany from the black sea or stick a german pontoon there!
    - relocate some of the labor brigades in the urals
    - fix 1-2 spawn event errors
    - adjust the units file to combat the t-34 to JS2 trick.

Once our TOT conversion is done i'll get some tot events happening based on historical accuracy and gameplay for you to have a look/play at!

I'm looking forward to the TOT version that we are compliling thanks MacGalleo.

Ditto for the rivers that flow into the Baltic and North Sea. IIRC, when I played RF 1.5 some time after you released it, transports from UK steamed from the White Sea into the Baltic and there were some winter [when the Luftwaffe was impotent] amphib operations along the two rivers. Berlin was captured in Jan '44.

Rather than changing terrain to block the rivers, it might be interesting to place invisible mines, like the one at Rostov, at the mouth of each river.

This is what I started by.
        - Changed the .scn file by thinning out the rear echelons of the German forces by ~170 of the weakest units.
        - Changed number of units spawned by the Events file to have "one unit killed = one units created" (in the first Event file for the moment).

I agree, this is the best starting point. Catfish has done an excellent job to convert it.

Yes, and it will remain several free slots for other units. Why not any new US units or any new ones for lend lease (A20 bomber, p39...)?

There seems to be interesting points in Colwyn's version 1.5. I hope making the scenario more difficult to win.

I will be very pleased to send you the files as soon as I finish changes. There is still room in the Events file to add some tot events happening based on historical accuracy and gameplay.

Redfront redux for ToT will be a real community project ...(McMonkey )

And I'll be volonteer to test it after....

I like this idea. I think it would be better than changing terrain...

            • I'm looking forward to this. At the moment I have a nasty cold, have been trying to work on Fortress Europe and The Balkan Wars but cannot concentrate, very frustrating as I have several days holiday and so far I have done nothing really constructive!

I will have a go at Red Front to see what ideas I can add!

Did you save the scenario with just the changes to eliminate the 'too many units' bug? If so, would it be possible to send me it so that I can add the gfx files for a release (at long last!)?

BTW, did your edits preserve the ghost turn?

I like the idea of adding some lend-lease stuff like P-39s and Valentines (2 of the most numerous and useful additions to the Russian arsenal). If free slots could be used for these and the more anachronous file-swap unit changes, that would be a useful second-stage release prior to the inevitable long delay before a final full-on edit is made.

                  • Yes but I added a second Hedgehog unit in the left units slot for the later stage of the scenario.

I Increased number of Hedgehogs in german cities to make them tougher to conquer. (x2 the number in each city there were some).

Feel free to let them or not...

If you want I delete them, tell me...

                      • The latest progression :

                        * No airlifting units from UK to the USSR.
                        ------------------------------------------
                        - Removed "Air Force base" from the improvements the player can build.

                        * Give units a choice in what they pillage.
                        -------------------------------------------
                        - Added Transporter in "@PILLAGEMENU" in the game.txt file.

                        * Making machine guns a bit stronger and partisans weaker.
                        ----------------------------------------------------------

                        * Reduced mvt of Howizers from 2 to 1.33 and increased mvt anti tank gun and machine gun from 1 to 1.33.
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        * Increased number of Hedgehogs in german cities to make them tougher to conquer.

                            • I need your opinions :

I have 9 free units slots for lend lease, additionnal Allied units or additionnal German units (for the end of the game, for example)....

                              Some possible units :
                              * lend lease
                              - A-20 (in Chelyabinsk)
                              - P-39 (in Chelyabinsk)
                              - P-40 (in Chelyabinsk)
                              - Valentine (in Chelyabinsk and/or UK)
                              - Sherman (in Chelyabinsk and/or UK)
                              - Hurricane (in Ashkhabad)
                              - Spitfire (in Ashkhabad)

                              * Allied units
                              - B17
                              -artillery

And finally I think I will let the supply convoy unit.
I agree with Agricola that having to develop Soviet industry adds a great deal to the scen. And one way to force players to develop Soviet industry would be to have Supply Convoys taper off sharply during summer ’43.
