  • Yeah, Fairline is right. To change the events would be to change Nemo's design. Keep this idea for a future date. I'm sure we'll use it, if not for a different scenario. I have to say, it is a great idea, but for a later date.

    • From some old posts by John Possidente I recall that the AI got a bit of polish here and there. Red Front was optimized for Civ2 FW and MP. Would ToT effect gameplay in a negative or positive way?
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

      • I agree - let's keep it simple:

        1) Optimize graphics

        2) Fix bugs

        What version to start with?

        V1.4? or v1.5?

I don't think that we can decide the v1.4/1.5 question until we know Colwyn's position on using his RF v1.5. I believe that fairline has been looking into this.

I can't entirely agree with Harry because IMO, one of the weaknesses in both RF 1.4 and 1.5 is that players can avoid the battle of Stalingrad and the Caucasus campaign by using good defensive strategies that reduce the entire 1942 German campaign to a minor nuisance. The attached, zipped .bmp file, shows the RF v1.5 Stalingrad front in May '42. The minefields between Rostov and Serafimovich prevent the Germans from getting across the Don. [Could someone please PM me instructions on how to include an image in a post to make it easier for readers. Reading the vB Code help file didn't help me much.]

The problem arises from the events that are used to simulate German forces crossing the Don River. A few, imaginative new events and a tweak of existing ones could get the German forces across the river.

I think that my question boils down to whether changing/adding events in this case is considered as closing a loophole or as unnecessary changes to Nemo's work.

EDIT: Attachment didn't stick. Please see next post.

            • I would go with a change to events to get round the Stalingrad problem Agricola. Again, this is a change to overcome a loophole rather than a major change to the scenario just for the sake of it.

I haven't heard anything back from Colwyn BTW....

OK, here's a screenie to show progress with the graphics. I've made the bulk of the Summer 1941 units now - just a couple of aircraft and the civilian gfx to go. City and resourse gfx are yet to be changed, and I could do with some new fir tree graphics.

              • Fantastic graphics!

Like I already said, RF is still a great scenario and doesn't need too many changes. But there are some things, like that Stalingrad problem, which should be "fixed"...
I also remember that the game gets somewhat boring at the end. Maybe you could add some minor events which appear later in the scenario like (more) Invisible Volkssturm after german cities are taken and extraordinary strong Waffen-SS which defend their country till the end etc

                • That image makes this old general weep at the sheer coolness!

                  PS
                  @Fairline:
Are the Soviet style WW2 cities not suitable?
I can rustle something else up if you want...

And would you want me to press on with some suburbs?

                  Let me know...

                  • Those ToT graphics are amazing - what a difference from the old 8 bit.

I think we should tweak things to make life as difficult for the player as possible. Nothing like getting whipped by the AI - heheh

I think we're on the right track here. . .

                    Cheers!

                          • Amazing work. but why are some russian tanks and soldiers facing eastwards?

                            • ToT can make troops face left or right, effectively mirroring the units East or West.

Up and down movement also affects the unit facing in ToT...
