          • In AD 720, we had reached the endgame. The Chinese had fallen, and the Russians had been reduced to three cities. The French had respawned to an island as the Vikings.

We killed off the Vikings, conquered Sverdlosk and Tblisi, then bribed Beijing. The Russians respawned as the Romans right next to the Crusader who had destroyed Trondheim. His partner on the boat killed the Roman settler; no respawn, game over.

Final result: conquest in AD 740. Score 1864, 242%.

            • DaveV,

Great game! Your excellent pictorial guide to victory was fun to read and watch. We all must have another conquest rematch, so I can work on improving my own methods.

              LaFayette,

Success at last, but remember that you are one of those lucky ones that can recognize city walls when looking right at them!

Now if only I could tell when cities I am attacking are empty, I could fly my flags of victory even sooner!

                • After reading the rest of the thread, I'll specify the rules of engagement I used: no black-clicking, no hut-finder. I bribed three cities: Nishapur, I think (?), Leipzig, and Beijing. The latter two were both walled, and I didn't want to lose a lot of units attacking them. Karakorum and Moscow were both walled and unbribeable. I barely was able to take Karakorum, losing, IIRC, four crusaders and three elephants (with one of each left with a sliver of life). I expected Moscow to be a huge climactic battle, and had most of my army gathered at its gates, but it fell easily.

I had a Spotless reputation for most of the game, but sneak-attacked the Spanish and Chinese when they wouldn't oblige me by declaring war. I think I ended the game at Despicable.

                      • Congratulations, Dave.V !!

Your thorough I.C.S. article in the G.L. finally makes conquest strategy clear to me. Shields, shields, shields. Your generous postings of .sav's from this tourney also helped a lot. I replayed the game (for about the fourth time) aiming to match your growth and production rates. This shaved 1000 years off my original
conquest - from 1834AD to 840AD! I also kept a spotless rep, for whatever that's worth.

I had some luck with goody huts and could rush some settlers early on. I even surpassed your sleaziness for a while. But I lagged in science, maybe because 2-3 tributes/huts brought unwanted advances. So, I got elephants a few turns late. Our paths diverged around 1AD when I attacked Japan, (then Russia and China) instead of the Germans. My pace suffered a little at the end, because I didn't plan ahead for Spain - 9 cities, and far from home. But with 170 units and 180 cups of coffee, it's not too hard to carry out an attack.

BTW, I noticed a couple of odd things in your saves:

                        1) You built several cities in swampland/jungles on the road to Germany. (eg, see Meletos in your 25BC screenshot). Was there a reason?

                        2) A silk-special suddenly appears next to Athens (loc(6,16), between 1000BC and 425BC). Huh !?

BTW#2: Can anyone explain bonus scoring, or suggest a reference? The results seem to vary randomly by as much as 400 points; for example, when I finish off another player's game or replay the last few moves of one of my own games.

                          • About bonus scoring, there are old threads in the archive, but I couldn't care less, since playing for score is just a bore.
Have you tried the 'search' function ?

                              2) The grass was mined to reveal a hidden special. There are many threads that will tell the whole story.

                              Outstanding result!!

Let me give this one a shot.

I sometimes will build cities on a mountain or jungle when in conquer mode - the rationale being that a city can be built in 1 turn, complete with road, whereas building a road in the tile itself can take several turns. This trick obviously costs you a Settler, but when you have lots of Settlers and not as much time, it can be worthwhile.

                                Am I right?
