I was distracted by the beginning of your post which seemed to be saying that Solo was not accurate. I see now that you did not mean that. I enjoyed the shadow dance, however. Three posters making three accurate statements about the same thing, all using different words.

My own HUMILIATING story is that, despite good advice received from stu and solo, I have tried many times again and anything seems to be working fine as they describe, but the final reply when I try to submit is that the url is invalid

Could it be because I played MGE instead of 2.42 ?

I played 2 scenarios (both about the Spanish Civil War) in the meantime (comments on the Strategy Forum tomorrow).

I guess I am definitely better at making strategical choices than I am at finding my way between files and directories

I copy and paste the game URL, as stu and solo explained. I can see the URL which is:
                C:\MPS\Civ2\GOTM\ap_b4000\Ap_Auto.zip

but when I click upon 'submit' I only get a reply:'invalid url'

May I perhaps try and send the game here as an attached file to my next post ?

                  Aha!!!!!!

That is not a URL, but a location on your hard disK!!

Step 1) go to the top of this page and click on 'upload' - it is one of the keywords in the list starting 'control panel' - this brings you to a screen that asks you which file you wish to upload - use the 'brouse' button to locate your file in the same fashion as when you attach a file to a post - and then click the 'upload' button just below. the file is now saved on 'Poly' and has a URL.
IIRC the next screen will display your current uploaded files (of which there is only the one) right click on your file which will now be named something like xxxx_Ap_Auto.zip and choose 'Copy Shortcut'.

Step 2) Go to the HoF submit a game page and where it asks for URL left click in the space to get the cursor flashing then right click and choose 'Paste' - Voila

I suppose I would have problems if I tried to get (and keep) a job as Webmaster

                    Anyway, I'll try again.

I didn't keep a log file, but I have enough saves to reconstruct my game:

I started out with a standard ICS opening. As of 2250 BC, the Greek empire comprised four cities:

                          • After more expansion and exploration (and a lucky hut), the empire looked like this in 1000 BC:

                            • As of 425 BC, we had relieved the Mongols of one of their cities. Marco Polo had allowed us to find the location of the competition, and also let us begin our game-long campaign of extortion. Although the Russians started the Hanging Gardens before us, it was easy to beat them to that key wonder by rushbuilding caravans.

                              • By 25 BC, the Mongols were reduced to their capital. Since it was walled, I bypassed it to go after the Germans.
