Another rule for the game should be:

If a player loss connection or doesn't show up and no subs can be found we wait 30 mins ONLY then play on.

I suggest that in this circumstance the resultant AI civ is completely ignored diplomacy and trade-wise for the session. If AI declares war we handle it in the usual way (ie someone logs in as the AI to make peace)

I didn't "agree" to anonymous play. I think the whole idea is silly, really. If it will make people think that people are going to act differently when they perceive themselves as "losing", they're deluding themselves. Basically, I agree with Capo.

Now, I'm not totally against it, if people really think they'll behave differently with anonymity, when in all actuality most people have worse attitudes when behind the shield of anonymity, and it will make them feel better, then I'll do it, but I do agree with Capo that it's kinda silly.

12a-3a is better for me than 7:30a-whatever. Two reasons, first of all I like sleep, second of all, I work in the middle of the second one. I'd only be able to play for 1.5 hours at 7:30a on weekends before work beckoned and I started dragging the turns out on everyone because customers calling would take priority over the game.

Other than that, as the person who has been in last place due to coming in late and taking over the civ that had the worst start of all the other ones for the entirety of HOTW XI, I can safely say I've been happy as a clam. Disappointed that I haven't been able to get involved in more diploing because nothing exciting ever seems to happen on my poop-covered island, but it's also my first Diplogame and so I've spent more time watching the veterans work it, and since I was the first to discover Communism I got to play around a bit with that.

Being in last place can be fun. Get the competitive edge out of your system in week day games, for the love of god. This is not a competitive game, this is a cooperative game. I look at it in the sense that I'm not playing the game for my enjoyment, although I do enjoy it, I'm playing the game for the enjoyment of those reading the Diplogame Story Thread.

Perhaps you need to spend more time playing against people who regularly mop the floor with you (I'm not the best civ player out there, I admit it -.-;; ) in order to get used to not winning so that it doesn't become your primary goal.

Asmodeus is very right, even though I think the game is played primarily for the entertainment of the players not the thread readers.

A strong point is that people tend to behave worse when incognito. But I think this can be countered by the fact that when the game is over identities are revealed.



Why is everyone using suddenly using EST only for the time slot? It would be considerate to write the time in GMT as well.
Concerning time slots I’m quite flexible but I won’t be available on Sundays from 9.40 to 11.20. This can be changed as well but I need a heads up of at least a week.

I think that 26th of January would be a good start date, with connectivity connections done by this weekend. Lets try to iron out the remaining stuff. Perhaps this discussion about anonymous play deserves it’s own thread? Someone needs to organize this thing.


BTW Can't Cybershy go take his family to a later mass? Explaining it's because he has to play a computer game might be hard though.

Let's face it, anonymous play will not work despite a majority voting for it.

Capo will not let it work. It will fail. Let's forget about it.

The oratory force of Capo has effectively sabotaged a new and exciting element of the diplo game. Maybe another time with another group.

The course of HOTWV was changed by serious OOC diploing, ie using your online relationship with a playing mate to reassure them of something happening or not happening in the game (eg tricking India/ozzy in to believing England/deity was sabotaging India). This behavior is of course going to give rise to more OOC diploing in response (eg England/deity imploring the world to believe it wasn't responsible for the sabotage - although the lines between IC and OOC can get blurred here).

Again, in other HOTW games we have situations where the game is dominated by OOC player connections and mateships.

The idea of anonymous play was not only seen as an exciting and mysterious way to play in full role mode but also to stopp OOC influences in the game.

I'm was SO looking forward to anonymous play but it aint gonna work with this group.

At the risk of causing a rift in the diplo community I'd be keen to play another marathon diplo game in another slot that works for the players in favour of anonymous play:

So far there have always been OOC reasons behind alliances and in game activities in all civ4 diplogames.

Deity, I can only commit to a new game if it starts about 2 hours earlier then our current spot.
I have lectures every saturday for the next 20 weeks, playing till early saturday morning is not going to be a good idea, even more if you take into account that I'm going to move to a new house and get a 2nd child in that timeframe as well.

I'll be very happy to sign up for a new game somewhere after the summer though. And I'd love it to experiment with anonymous playing.

deity I don't think there is a need for a division in the Diplo community. I have stated like Asmodeus has that I am willing to submit myself to majority opinion. I don't know Capo well, but I doubt it that he would intentionally sabotage the game once it started. That kind of behavior would earn a black spot for anyone, making him a persona non grata.


I think that all the details should be worked out first, then as a last matter we should have, one and only one vote on whether HOTW12 should be the game to experiment with anonymous play. May I remind you that, this suggestion would play quite into your hand since the majority of players are by your claim
pro-anonymous play.



PS Perhaps the time of HOTW12 could be moved two hours earlier so Cyber could play?

We should give thought to perhaps running a diplo-pittboss game.

That way, timeslots wouldn't matter. Anonomyous play would also probably be easier in this format.

First of all Ozzy I didn't say we should just randomly kick people out. I was saying when people start complaining about stupid **** like their starts, or the fact that there is a big bad alliance they can't deal with, we shoudl intervene. I don't do that, and I dare anyone to find ONE example of when I ever did something even REMOTELY close to *****ing about my start, complaining (beyond simply saying it sucks of course) about a situation stacked against me, or quit over some dumb ****. Find it.

Secondly, deity man, I thought you were cool. Simply saying I won't let anonymous play happen, and implying that I would sabotage it if we used it is childish. If you really think I would intentionally do something like that you are an *******.

I am only being realistic here. I can tell you right now if we played anonymously I'd be able to guess who everyone is, and those who I am not familiar with I will be able to deduce through elimination.

I am not saying I am going to post up what I think, or reveal these identities, I am just saying I know I can do that and I am pretty sure the rest of you are smart enough to do the same.

Just because a majority agrees on something does not make it right, and certainly does not mean it is going to WORK.

I am just saying it won't work, its impossible, if you really think we can play a game for months and months, with a week between each session, and around ten players who are all competing while at the same time remaining anonymous on a message board like this one you are kidding yourself.

That said I'll try it if you want to do it. But there is no point, and it won't work.

Alright, now that I got that out of my system.

As far as the January 26th start; I am cool with it, but I wouldn't want to start the game prematurely either. Basically I think we should run connection tests, which I could do at any time with whoever would like to.

I also think the start date would have to do with the map we decide to use as well. If we decide on a premade map we want to give the map maker enough time to make it and fine-tune it.

Another thing, if we decide to go with anonymous play we need to make sure the Apolyton mods are cool with it, and are willing to give us secondary accounts so nobody "knows who we are" or whatever you guys think is going to happen.

Plus I just now realized that deity also suggested playing a new game because of the anonymous thing. I can't believe that man, I've always maintained that I will play anonymously if that is the agreement, I am just simply trying to save us the waste of time it will require to happen.

If this is going to create a wedge-issue, then fine I'll submit, but again its silly and it won't work.

Well anyway, with all of these real issues we need to handle I think we should push the date from the 26th to the following weekend. This way we SHOULD have enough time to check connectivity, get our map going, agree on settings, and give in to deity's temper tantrums.
