Yeah, three am will cut it short for me too, especially with people wanting to continue. If we do play the 12 am to 3 am timeslot in the US then there is NO POSSIBLE WAY I will be able to play beyond three, and that can't be debated (even if I want to, which I probably will, it wouldn't be wise of me to do so).
As far as playing on a premade map; I personally would prefer to play this particular game on a random map. Traditionally, or at least in the begining of the HOTW series, we played on a world map. I do remember discussion as to how much we enjoyed playing on the random map, correct me if I am wrong but I do believe it was Ozzy who said he enjoyed the random maps more because of the discovery aspect involved. Obviously this attitude has changed, and I like to think it has something to do with the "grass being greener on the other side" syndrome. Personally I think that playing on a premade map, especially one like Earth where we arleady know the geography is going to ruin part of the game.
People are going to quickly try to capture the Bosporus, the Suez and Panama, I think that borders will un-naturally occur following our current notions of Earth's borders. And finally we are going to know where everyone is from the start of the game, unless of course we have random starts but what fun is it to play on an Earth map with random starts?
Also I disagree with the idea that we make the continents closer to foster earlier contact, I think it would be more interesting to see how two separate hemispheres wind up when they finally come into contact with eachother.
Finally as far as the anonymous play goes; I am totally against it, and deity is right when he said it will be obvious as hell who I am once the game starts, at least to the vets.
So I guess what I would want is a large/huge map with inhabited continents instead of a terra map. And while I'd rather not play at Lz's timeslot, we Yanks have had the benefit of time so I am willing to play later so the Europeans can get some sleep. Apparently the Australians always wind up getting a good timeslot, because it always seems to me at least that its the middle of the day no matter when we schedule these things. At least that's the vibe I get from deity, although he is senile, or so I hear...
