actually, i do not believe they would understand a latin speaker unless they had latin lessons. base vocabulary is similar but the grammar is pretty different and italian is 2000 years further developed. i presume (going out on a ledge here) that the difference is similar to german and scandinavian or hebrew and arabic...

And the giant problem with Latin is that you can put the words in any order you want and it's still technically grammatically correct...heh, you can go on for an entire sentence about someone shooting someone, and not know who did the shooting or who was shot until the last two words.

are you sure about that? many moons ago i had 2 years of latin. i was pretty crap at it but i do remember always having to put the verb in the end. and iirc there was a pretty strict order of subject and object and even whether dative or the accusative form came first. something like "The servant [nom] gave his master's [gen] book [acc] to the woman [dat]",... of course that was the english order, the latin one would look different.
and even if the order is irrellevant, you always know from the declination what case it is...

Oh yeah, you can totally figure out the entire sentence easily because of what case everything is, but technically, IIRC whichever order it was in didn't matter. I dunno, this is only 3 years of Latin talking too.

Me? I was Apolyton's first non-mod Deity...hmph! No one even remembers, huh?

Well, I strongly advise you: don't believe to this myth!

Of course latin is at the root of modern italian language, but while many words sound the same or similar enough, grammar and more modern words are so different no one will understand you, if not (may be) christian catholic priests and friars, that use to study latin for read religius text. Doctors and biological related specialist still use many greeks and latin words, but scientific reports are in italian or english.

Some course of study still teach latin, but it's not really a need when you look for a job, while a couple of foreign languages can be the icing of the cake...

A Mao sighting is rare indeed, but not knowing of him? Heresy!

you sound like us slowly aging people being insulted when today's kids say things like "alice cooper who?" or "what is ivan lendl?"

I'm not insulted, but I thought Mao would be known by an Emperor at least. Then again you have only been here for 3 years. Even I, who registered in 2000, missed his most glorious days I think.

But, while I have heard of Alice Cooper, I think I am lost on Ivan Lendl?

"Most glorious days" hahaha you flatter me too much.

I was mainly around Stories & Diplomacy first actually...back when we actually had story threads (kinda like the NES...not quite) and actual Diplomacy games...and still remember when stories were in the OT. Yeah...I guess our paths may have just never crossed. I doubt that anyone from...say...CtP or SMAC would know of me.

I laugh my ass off when I get leaders quoting lines from Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings". So far I've gotten:

"Did you ever know that you're my hero? You're everything I wish I could be."

                              and also

"You are the wind beneath my wings."

Some of those devs have a sick sense of humor.
