Well, 'port' should be taken less than literally here. There's no reason MS couldn't make XSports or something like that quite cheaply... they could even get ESPN to get in on it and make it related to XGames or something.

      • While I doubt MS would implement a device that looked almost identical to the Wiimote, I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of motion sensing added to the 360 or its successor - and implemented with greater results (speaking to its accuracy and abilities) than Nintendo. Microphone, a built-in, quality speaker, etc.

And given how shallow most Wii games are, the experience would be much improved on the 360; a lot of the games on the Wii are party games, so online multiplayer would be a huge boost.

              • Wow. PS3 has 1 game in the Top 10? Wonder what the sales were like for the PS3 version of RSV2.

360 is nicely represented. Wii got a nice boost from Brawl. That makes what, 5-6 games worth buying - hell, worth playing, out of a catalog of ~190 games.

                • The ps3 had a rough software month, let's just put it this way, Brawl outsold the entire catalog by 750k.

                  • Speaking of the PS3...

Looks like Kojima Jr. isn't the only one disappointed with Metal Gear Solid. The latest issue of the UK's Edge magazine contains an interview with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, who expresses disappointment with the latest game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It isn't so much the gameplay itself as it is the graphics.

"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress.

I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.

                    Kojima's statements bolded.

                    • Looks to me like Wii "won" this month.

Outsold PS360 combined by 50%. This is just a fad, right?

SSBB outsells all the 360 titles in the top ten combined. Thats without counting Wii GH3,or "its really hardware" Wii Play.

360 folks are reduced to attacking the quality of Wii games, this in a month when the second biggest 360 seller is "Army of Two".

No, Wii owners dont buy a new FPS every couple of months as "core" 360 owners seem to (apparently without regard for quality). But from what I can gather they are having fun, which is what this hobby is supposed to be about, no?

But yeah, things look bad for the PS3, while for the 360 this looks like just an off month (and yeah, the 360 numbers would look much better if we werent comparing them to the hot second half of 2007 the 360 had). Of course this is US only.

(Note - all numbers above, aside from those based on the latest NPD release, are off the top of my head, and should not be relied on when making decisions that effect your financial well being or health)

SSBB is like Halo, Final Fantasy, or GTA. It's sales were guaranteed to be huge. Most of Nintendo's franchises are huge sellers. Unfortunately, their first party titles are pretty much the only games with sales worth mentioning. Compare to the great games on the 360: Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, BioShock, Oblivion, Call of Duty 4, Rock Band, Forza, Rainbow Six Vegas, to name a few. We've got all genres represented from many different publishers/developers, with a great list of games to come. The Wii's top 5 are dominated by Nintendo, with the rest of the catalog consisting of crappy ports and shoddy games.

And of course everyone is buying Wii Play for the controller. Who is stupid enough to argue otherwise, with its terrible reviews?

I haven't played Army of Two, although from the reviews I gather it's a solid, but not spectacular, FPS with some cool multiplayer/coop features.

While I agree the Wii is selling a ton of hardware, when looking at the software, had SSBB not launched, where would they be?

                        • This wasn't an off month for the 360, it was a month in which it sold a pretty solid amt of software considering it didn't have any exclusives.

The wii software performs similarly to the DS-sells a crapload, but its mainly found below the top 10, this month is an exception due to the massive launch of ssbb. Its software, even excluding wii play, has outsold its competitors since December.

edit: to be more specific, wii software outsold 360 software in Dec and Jan, was outsold in Feb by a little, and March is unknown as of yet.

You do realize that about 1/2 that list isn't exclusive to the 360, right?

and the game sales ARE worth mentioning, esp as they seem to exceed what was expected. Certainly Halo3 was a win for for 360 - this month, SSBB was a win for the Wii.

360 with lots of SW and Wii with mainly 1st party titles.
Thats been the expectation from the beginning. If several of the 360 titles (and multiplat titles where 360 has been dominant) have done better than expected, by the same token its true that several of the Nintendo 1st party titles have done better than expected. As for 3rd party, while we are all still waiting for developers to get on the Wii bandwagon, it should be noted that number 10 on this months SW list was a third party Wii title.

And of course everyone is buying Wii Play for the controller. Who is stupid enough to argue otherwise, with its terrible reviews?

And I said so, didnt I?

I thought I recall seeing a poor review. But lets say I misremember. If solid but not spectacular is the standard, Im guessing we can come up with well over 5 Wii games that fits the bill.

But yeah, things look bad for the PS3, while for the 360 this looks like just an off month (and yeah, the 360 numbers would look much better if we werent comparing them to the hot second half of 2007 the 360 had). Of course this is US only.

If my grandma had a mustache shed be my grandpa. Or something. If SSBB hadnt lauched, and they hadnt launched something else instead, this would be a month where Wii had no blockbusters, and would rely on the legs of the games that some call "crap" but which apparently continue to sell. With GH at the top of the list, and the only one to make the top ten.

At the rate things are going, Wii is a few months away from catching up to the 360 in installed base, in the USA, 360's strongest market. While the Wii is no software selling monster, it seems to have enough popular SW to keep word of mouth strong, and SW sales strong enough to keep Nintendo happy. And no massive disappointments in terms of 3rd party offerings that SHOULD have done well but didnt (in contrast to PS3, IIUC)
