    • some interesting figures for japanese games sales(in japan):

Apart from Wii Fit, it seems the japanese like buying DS games the most. Is it because they love small things the most?

I wonder how these figures stack up to usa and europe games sales? The numbers seem quite modest to me - with only a few titles breaking the 100,000 mark.

      • Japan is the smallest market by far. Also the most eccentric.

If you count Europe as a single market, despite 360 dominating in UK, Sony much stronger in France, and PC still being the dominant platform, pretty much, in Germany.

From what I have read elsewhere, in Japan, the handhelds are what "hardcore" gamers play, which in part is why the PS3 has done so poorly vs the Wii there.

Europe is widely considered a single market in that it's a region in technical terms (zone) and in terms of release dates.

Does this make zero sense to anyone else here?

                • The Wii links to the DS, doesn't it, while the PS3 doesn't link to the PSP? Maybe? I dunno.

                    Other way around, actually...

PS3/PSP have very, very extensive integration. You can watch PS3 media and play some PS3 games through your PSP. You can download PSOne games and play them on your PS3 or PSP also.

The Nintendo DS is not really connect-friendly with the Wii at all.

                    • The explanation Ive seen, is that in Japan, recently, the folks who are into buying lots of games, being very "serious" about their games, etc, whod be the natural demographic for the PS3, are mainly focused on handhelds. This has hurt PS3 sales, but has not hurt the Wii so much, since that appeals there, as here, to a broader demographic more than to traditional gamers.

I dont know if thats true, but Ive seen it claimed.

a single region, to be sure.

To me it attributes the success of one home console over another home console, due to a handheld console. Which does not compute.

It makes even less sense given the knowledge that the console LOTM perceived as "doing poorly" has tighter integration with the portable consoles than the other.

It makes even less sense given the PS3 has outsold the Wii in Japan for 4 straight weeks now.

So no, I'd argue that it doesn't "naturally" suggest that interpretation.

If you simply say theyre seperate markets, with no influence on each other. Is it not possible that in some places, handhelds and home consoles are considered partial substitutes for each other?

                                His logic follows perfectly.

                                1) The Japanese "gamer" demographic, which traditionally bought home consoles, is now buying more handheld consoles instead, possibly due to the DS itself.

                                2) The PS3 is marketed towards the gamer demographic.

                                3) The Wii is marketed towards demographics beyond the gamer demographic.

From those, it follows that the Wii will now be selling better than the PS3.
