I'm interested in hearing how people are getting on controlling games like Mario and Zelda with the wii remote. I don't want to set up an Asher troll but reading through some of the reviewers' comments about using it for these games just makes me cringe. I didn't actually realise that the classic controller and gamecube controller weren't supported for most games as well, if I am reading it right.

So more feedback from wii owners please.
You will see with time how right I am. It'll take people like Kuciwalker a few more years to concede, but they'll get there.

The Wiimote is a neat controller for a certain niche of games, and a hacky, frustrating controller for most. Too many people with simpler minds were mesmerized by the OMG IMAGINE A STAR WARS LIGHT SABRE GAME WITH THE WII type thoughts instead of rational ones...they will come.

    • On some games, the controls feel awkward, frustrating. In others, I wouldn't want to go back to old style joypad, ie SSX Blur, Zelda. Golf I'm not into, but I am looking forward to the Bigs, the baseball game. I cant say how much I love controlling Blur using the mote/chuk combo, and I think a hockey game could be fantastic with a similar scheme.

I;m glad the cube controller is to be used for SSBB, since its a button masher, I think the controls for MK look rough to use (there is a new video out showing that).

My next rental is Godfather: Blackhand, I've heard that the implementaion of controls is quite wild in that. And frankly, what the wiimote can do physically makes games like that and Manhunt 2 potentially much more violent and sadistic than GTA.

AS far as shooters go, I haven't played any, but they've gotten rough reviews. I'm surely going to pick up RE4: Wii and Metroid, which will hopefully use it well. And I'm hoping for a gun attachment soon.

Niche games like Trauma Center (which I've played) and Cooking Mama (which I have not!) use the wii mote effectively for a pretty interesting/unusual experience that can't be found outside the DS.

Party games are a hell of a lot more fun moving your arms around looking foolish than just mashing buttons.

Oh and Super Paper Mario is great fun, but the sprites (whatever they're called these days) are pretty much taken straight from the cube paper mario. and there is too much text, not enough action off the bat. It is a must buy for the Wii, IMHO, despite the lack of graphical upgrade from its ancestor.

      • I guess I can chime in with an "I guess I don't see what the problem would be". It's not like the Wiimote has to be used a certain way. Like in Zelda, most any sudden motion will work for a "sword slash".

It's just like it's always been: if the controls are difficult and cumbersome it's the game-makers fault, not the platform. There should be plenty of games that show enough viable control schemes that the strange ones will stick out. I think they have definitivly proven that there is a limit to the dexterity of the Wiimote and with that in mind the rest is up to the game developers.

        • And, moreover, for those games that the wiimote doesn't work well for, the software developers should code the game to use the gamecube/classic controller. If developers are jumping on the wiimote and trying to get it to do things it oughtn't, whose fault is that

          • Ok I'm still not convinced but the feedback here helps. And although in part I agree with Asher on the controller issue (though in my case without having tried it - I must borrow my mates wii at some stage) where we differ is probably in the long term prospects. Whatever my current views, people seem to be buying the wii, and as more games like Metroid and Mario Galaxy arrive that should give a further boost.

And I think there is room is the market for a 'less serious' console. I do tend to agree it is a touch underpowered and I think another 20% on the price for a touch more ooomph would probably have been a good idea. The screenies I've seen have not been at all impressive.

Look at the number of classic/gamecube controllers to Wiimotes. If you restrict your game to a controller that doesn't come with the console, you're restricting your sales, which is something publishers do not want.

It also defeats the whole purpose of releasing on the Wii.

So the result? Games with hackey, kludgey Wiimote controls that shouldn't have them.

              • Not so much really, after all, the norm these days is to ship consoles with one controller, so inevitibly consumers are going to pick up an additional controller for a second person, hence they are more conditioned to buy accessories.

If you play SSB as a button masher you must be pretty bad at it

Also, there are a lot of Gamecube controllers. A lot of the Wii owners will already have several because they had a Gamecube. And other people can probably get them for cheap.

                    • Yeah, but not all games support them if I understand it correctly.

I have it, have owned it for years, but frankly haven't played more than a couple hours. Just dont like the type of game. Probably would have like it if I was in a dorm situation. will still get the new one when it gets released.
