Not powergaming is definitely more fun. It does help to roleplay at least the slightest bit - such as decide that your character is a fighter and won't spells except the simplest ones.

But another problem was with some of Morrowind's inherent features... like training. Were you powergaming if you used trainers a lot? Hmm. They're right there, and clearly meant to be used. Yet the result was that you could easily get your mage character to be fairly competent with all weapons, too. Somehow money was never a problem.

    • Honestly it never bothered me that you could have a multitalented character (a mage with great sword abilities) in Morrowind. It was sort of fun ... you could play with a supercharacter Battlemage type, or with a mage-only, or a fighter only ... whatever. Sometimes I want an easy time just bouncing around the world, sometimes I want a challenging game ...

      • Anyhow, on a different point, anyone have suggestions for where to preorder the game? My qualifications:
        • I would probably like the Collector's Edition, but I probably don't care that much.
        • I'd like it the first day, in theory, but I work tue-sat, so I probably don't care that much what day it gets here (if I order it online and not in a store)
        • I'd like it cheaper if possible.
        • I want to be sure I get it opening week, though, no risky places

Suggestions? I'm probably looking at Amazon if I don't figure out something better I have looked around a bit, but not seen anything under retail price significantly (I have amazon prime, so shipping is free.)

        • I got it with Amazon. I did pick the Super-Saving shipping (in theory, 5-7 days, but in reality, 1-2 days), but I don't need it on the first day. And I'll save a few bucks on sales tax and get the Collectors Edition.

          • I've been burnt way too many times with preorders, and coincidently I have no money at the moment so all signs point to getting it after its released.

            • I figure with the preorder, I'll get it. I don't have to rush out and get the Collectors Edition... and I don't need it right on the first day.

              • I'm actually going to wait a bit after release this time. I am mostly interested to hear how it runs on minimum-spec systems.

                • I wont buy it unless all the reviews and everyone in this thread says I must.

                  • I can say now that you must. Might give you less time to spam the boards .

So you ARE going to buy it?

Alas, I hardly ever get time to do that these days anyway.

Not until my conditions are met. And I can almost guarantee one of the Morrowind naysayers will post at some stage.

For example, my current character was always encumbered (a pain in the ass), he was real slow (again, a pain in the ass) and his people skills were too low. I couldn't naturally persuade anybody of anything. So I targetted those skills and their governing attributes.
I didn't like Morrowind all that much, but this was not a problem, in my opinion. I finished the game with a character I really liked, who never did any skill for "practice" and never trained. He just went about his business, doing his stuff, and levelling when the game told him to.

That being said, I can imagine getting into the game and discovering you want to be good at a skill you didn't make a major or a minor. That's what trainers are for; given how easy it is to get gold in the game, there's no excuse for not training yourself up in an area you feel is lacking. There's no excuse for mindlessly practicing skills.

                            • There's no excuse for training either, and people get enjoyment out of games in different ways. Every skill can be levelled quite easily and fairly quickly with the possible exceptions of armourer, athletics, mercantile and block. Skills are quite easy to get up, even if you only use them while doing a quest rather than (realistically) practicing them as you go.

I don't disagee; as I said, I never trained. But paying somebody to teach you, say, acrobatics is both less tedious and more realistic that jumping off a tower over and over until you level up. But I think we agree that the most enjoyment can be had from just playing the game and not worrying about levelling.
