                          • Chapter 6 - God's will

The cardinals met to decide on the issue of Juan Borgia’s death. They knew an artist was doing something for his father Rodrigo, a relief involving the representation of the battle of the centaurs, a work for which he wasn’t paid. Hence their prime suspect was Titian, Venetian artist. However, a number of cardinals suspected Niccolò Machiavelli because they didn’t buy his story about two killers and when a new murder happened, they automatically suspected him of being behind the whole thing and accusing Luther to shift the blame.

The cardinals were so divided that the vote was inconclusive and Titian and Machiavelli received an equal number of votes. God was invoked to break the deadlock.

“Since the number of votes for Titian and Machiavelli is the same, I shall now hear their statements and then we shall leave it to our Lord God to decide”, Pope Pius III declared.

Titian maintained his innocence while Machiavelli explained that he lacked the motive for the murders and also reiterated his theory about the two murderers a few cardinals now believed in.

Then a coin was tossed and God made it fall in favour of Machiavelli. This meant Titian’s death, but it also meant Machiavelli’s innocence was asserted by the highest authority possible.

Before his death, when asked if he repents and renounces the Satan, Titian requested to speak. Pope Pius III granted his request.

“I know that nothing I would tell you could possibly save me now. But I must tell you this anyway. You think you have gotten to the bottom of this? But I am telling you, you don’t know the first thing about anything. It’s the fairytale. A three way fairytale. And the answer is in Florence.”
“What are you implying infidel?” Cardinal Wolsey interjected.
“Go to Florence! To the Medici palace! There you will find all the answers.” Titian continued.
“Take him away”, Piero de Medici was furious.
“Burn him!” Giovanni de Medici cried.

Titian was taken out and put at stake. The executioner lit the fire.
But shortly after that, before the smoke could choke Titian, heavy rain descended on Rome and put the fire down. Apparently God wouldn’t let an innocent die.

But Cardinal Farnese had other ideas. “Axe him!” he shouted.
The other cardinals cheered in support of the instant solution and the executioner obeyed and decapitated DrSpike.

                            ****

The rain continued throughout the day and into the night. In the morning it was still pouring. Machiavelli was informed about yet another murder. This time it was his fellow Florentine SnowFire who was found on the altar in the cathedral, his head smashed with a picture frame and his internal organs removed. A very large butcher knife was again used to make the gash.

The murderer must have left in haste, since a cardinal’s hat was found on the crime scene. Because of the rain, there were numerous footprints in and out of the cathedral in the muddy ground which were disappearing rapidly.

“Hmm, the footprints haven’t disappeared yet in spite of the heavy rain. The murderer must have committed the crime close to dawn. But what would poor Girolamo be doing in the cathedral so early in the morning before the sunrise?” Machiavelli was puzzled about the latest find.

But at least he had the footprints of the murderer. It would be enough now to simply compare them against all the suspects.

                              • It seems that despite all your killings that the people have allowed both Mafia to continue to live

With only 9 of you left, the odds of catching both of the killers seems to be getting more remote.

If the clues are correct in pointing to the Medici family, I know of at least one medici who was not involved
