  • FG: Mafia XXV - Renaissance in Italy

    Rome 1492

Pope Innocent VIII is at his death bed. The cardinals from all over the world have assembled to wait for the inevitable and elect a new pontiff. Powerful and enormously rich Cardinal Giuliano Della Rovere (Ben Kenobi), who succeeded in appointing Innocent eight years ago, hopes to forge a new political alliance that would keep him in the centre of the power. Little interested in the spiritual life, this patron of art has enriched himself during the reign of his uncle Sixtus IV, who gave him 9 wealthy bishoprics as well as the cardinal’s hat. His collection includes works of Raffaello (Adagio), Michelangelo (Skanky Burns), Leonardo da Vinci (Theben) and Titian (DrSpike).

A newcomer in Rome but equally rich is Rodrigo Borgia (rah) head of the Borgia family. Originally from Spain, this family rose high during the pontificate of Calixtus III, Rodrigo’s uncle, who appointed Rodrigo cardinal and vice chancellor of the Roman Catholic Church, which he used to amass the wealth needed to finance his political ambitions. Although priest and supposedly sworn to celibate, Rodrigo argued that celibate only prohibited him to marry and didn’t concern his sexual excesses with various concubines. So he produced numerous offspring: Sons Juan (reismark) and Cesare (Tuberski), who was infamous for his ruthlessness and daughter Lucrezia (Kassiopeia) whom Rodrigo used as pawn in his schemes.

Medici family, an old and incredibly rich Italian family from Florence could not hope to secure the papacy this time, because their most influential member, Lorenzo the Magnificent died a few months earlier. They were now led by Piero de Medici (Gamecube64), new prince of Florence, a reckless adventurer and a playboy, who paid little attention to the affairs of the state. His three younger brothers Giovanni (Jonny), Giulio (FlameFlash) and Giuliano (Sparrowhawk) were made cardinals several months ago as a favour of Innocent to Lorenzo the Magnificent, but in fact part of Giuliano Della Rovere’s plan to control the Sacred College of Cardinals before the pope’s expected death.

After the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent, two men became influential in Florence: Girolamo Savonarola (SnowFire), a firebrand preacher, leading figure in the spiritual life of Florence and an advocate of the reformation of the Church and Niccolò Machiavelli (joncha), politically the most influential man. They became the pivotal points of the Florentine resistance to Medici despotic rule.

Three influential cardinals, who were unlikely candidates for papacy but who could nevertheless sway the vote were Alessandro Farnese (Kalius), Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini (gjramsey) and Thomas Wolsey (duke o’ york), who was one of the most prominent figures at the English court. Giovanni Sforza (Spaced Cowboy), duke of Milan, also arrived to Rome to make sure a Medici is not elected to the pontificate.

In Rome for the first time is a young German scholar, Martin Luther (Whoha), whose reformist ideas have caught the eye of the pope and who had been summoned to Rome to defend his theological theories.

      The mafias have been informed.

The first kill will be processed tomorrow morning at the earliest, or an hour after I receive the first kill, whichever comes later.

That gives me an idea - how about using the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as setting for Mafia 26

Alas, he was already dead in 1492. But yes, Cardinal Giuliano Della Rovere also has some of his finest works

'Tis true, 'tis true. I only meant it as a joke, but I'm heartened to see it has also in fact been an inspiration.

Alas, I can only recall nine characters. Splinter, Shredder, the brain thingie, the pig-like mutant henchman, the four turtles, and of course April.

No surprise to me, considering you were Marie Antoinette. It's the softer side of Kassiopeia.

Hey, no worries. I'm sure you won't do anything silly 25 years or so from now. Besides, I think everyone agrees that the Pope is a schmuck, just that for some people, he's THEIR shmuck.

Therefore this is not a syllogism.

Nice, I dedicate my life to painting beautiful, inspiring paintings and being paid handsomely for doing so.

Machiavelli, eh? Either Lj-lj thinks highly of me, or he's trying to kill me off early. I think I can guess which one.
