  • Orton's actually pretty good. Better than Cutler.

    • Herniated disc. Surgery. Too bad.

The Boys have been pretty snakebit this year.

      • A lot of ham string injuries. Sounds like a project for training.

        • I did a quick study going back to 1990. It turns out what the Chargers are doing is pretty rare. On the average, only one team per season has a strength of victory greater than their strength of loss. And the Chargers' +105 difference is among the five highest in the last 24 seasons.

[For the record, the teams with even freakier seasons than the Chargers, in this respect, were: 1997 Colts [3-13], 1998 Jets [12-4] (lost 3-4 to start the season then caught fire), 2002 Saints [9-7] (one of the biggest collapses, went 7-2 then went 2-5 losing to Falcons, Browns, Bengals, Panthers and Vikings. 2003 Patriots. The 2003 Patriots had the biggest difference, at plus 161. They went 14-2, beating five playoff teams. Their two losses were to the Lions (6-10) and the Redskins (5-11). They also lost 2 of their first 4 and caught fire after that, winning 15 games in a row.
Interesting observation. Something to consider if the Chargers make it since the Chargers lost to Washington, Houston and the Raiders. Chargers have a chance to improve the measure with a win vs KC at home, as KC gets double counted.

I'm sure someone started a thread after all, since Poly has an amazing sports forum.

                • I may be wrong about this. I said Romo would choke only when it was crucial for him to do so. Now it's Orton! The Cowboys could go on a run here!

What? I'm saying it's a bright new day for Cowboys' football.

                        • Tony Romo has been heavily criticized throughout his career for crucial mistakes that have contributed to Dallas' late-season collapses. But since Romo became the Cowboys' starter in 2006, only Peyton Manning has more game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will miss the rest of the season due to a back injury, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Eagles become instant favorites to win East

The NFC East looks like Chip Kelly's to lose.

With NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reporting that Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is unlikely to play Sunday night against the Eagles because of a herniated disk, Kyle Orton would be next in line to lead Dallas against a Philadephia squad that looked unbeatable Sunday night in a 54-11 romp over the Chicago Bears.

For all the media heat draped upon him, Romo's production speaks for itself. Third in the league in touchdown passes and top ten in yardage, completion percentage and passer rating, Romo -- with more game-winning drives than any signal-caller in the NFL since 2011 -- is the beating heart of this offense. Orton, meanwhile, hasn't started an NFL game in two-plus years.

                          • I'd be curious to read which quarterback leads the league in "game losing drives" over the same period.

I agreed with this at first but I'm not so sure now that I think about it.

The Joe Namath days are long gone and intense Conference rivalry is a thing of the past (except when it comes to Ben, apparently). I think people would cheer for their Conference only so they could cheer for something. Not having something to cheer for could still be an issue but people could attach themselves to certain players they voted for or to the team captain or to Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders.

Maybe tie it with fantasy even more. Maybe the NFL should have a Pro Bowl Player of the Game determined by fantasy points in some standard format. That would give the players a little competitive push and make people feel more invested that their guy will be the top scorer. Have an NFL.com game out of it.

This seems fishy since I thought Eli Manning had the most.

According to Pro Football Reference, Romo has had 23 game-winning drives to Eli's 27 since 2006, 30 career.

Unless I'm missing something, ESPN goofed. ESPN and Pro Football Reference agree on Peyton's 25 since 2006 and Romo's 23, except ESPN does not list the NFL leader in game-winning drives, Eli.
