The Hawks gettng out from under Campbell's cap hit is huge.

Apparently Florida actually needed a silly contract on the books in order to reach the cap "floor"...?

That trade does look a bit odd.

Florida does have a ton of cap space, but they only have 11 players under contract for next year. They have no worries about making the floor.

I would have thought that Chicago would have had to give up something significant to move Campbell's contract, and yet Florida coughed up a decent player.

I guess it helped that Talon got a job somewhere else right away.

If I were pulling a "Ben kenobi" I would try to make a point that sutter is no longer the gm of the flames and the decision on this one was completely up to feaster and" you don't even know sutter was fired" . Instead though I will give the benefit of the doubt in that you might be commenting on Sutters past cap management in leaving the flames such that a tanguay signing at reasonable money eats up most remaining cap space.

My comment on sutter is that he did some ok things in the early days but then there was a point where he seemed to get desperate and almost everything he did in the last two years of his reign pretty much stunk

I'm glad to see Smyth back to Edmonton. That was his team.

I'm also glad to see his 6.25 cap hit isn't on Calgary books.

I'm not expecting a lot from him. He has a lot of miles on him and plays a hard style. He is exactly the kind of player that should be a good role model for the youngsters though. That, and he would have been a top scorer on the team last year.

Bieksa gets a 5-year, $23M (4.6M cap hit) contract. With a no trade clause.

Fun fact: Bieksa, in his entire career, has never played an entire NHL season. And only once was he even close.

I'm sure he'll get more durable with age, though.
