Da Bears are making news.

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for a major run at Julius Peppers, a league source said Tuesday, and Aaron Kampman also is an option for a team that's intent on landing a pass-rushing defensive end this offseason.

Peppers, who will not receive the Carolina Panthers' franchise tag, is the Bears' prime target. However, Peppers will not come cheap -- he was seeking around $40 million guaranteed from the Panthers. The Bears traditionally are a frugal team, but in this limited free-agent market, they are prepared to jump into the sweepstakes for Peppers, who had 81 sacks in eight seasons with the Panthers.

Kampman, who struggled to switch from end to linebacker in the Green Bay Packers' new 3-4 defense, also is someone the Bears are high on, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The Bears know Kampman well from their intense NFC North rivalry games against the Packers.

Kampman makes much more sense. He has skills and would be WAY cheaper.

The talking heads in the tribune this morning said the bears should wait for LT to realize that he's not worth starter money and then sign him at a bargain.

I don't think they are quite ready to give up yet on Slayton. I think they want to open things up and give him another crack at it.

Peopers isn't worth the kind of money he is asking for. Sure, "when" he decides to play, he can dominate. But he has been in equalivant of a contract year for the last two years, and did NOT produce. If they are thinking of blowing that kind of money, they should have just fired the entire coaching and management staff and eat the contracts. That would have been far better use of that kind of money, and probably help the team far more.

And now, the talking heads are saying that there is indeed serious interest in LT by the Bears... So I guess they will probably over pay him

25 sacks in 30 games is incredibly good production. What exactly were you expecting him to do?

A lot more for the money he is going to be asking. He was really a hot and cold player. When he wanted to play, he was fine... but there were many games where he just doesn't even show up.

That's true of every defensive end not named Reggie White. It's easy to take a DE out of a game. If he has even one sack, he had a good game. A guy like Peppers, who has a sack in most games, is worth a tremendous amount of money.

Ben has an infatuation with the San Diego Chargers and LT, and LT going to the Bears could be a good thing and just felt you would maybe capitalize on that opportunity to be closer to Ben ?

And as far as Peppers go, I'm sure somebody will pay him the big bucks... but I hope it isn't the Bears.
I'm not saying he's not good, but I am saying that he won't be worth the contract he gets. I would rather see the Bears use the money in different ways... there is so much more that the Bears need, and spending all that kind of money on Peppers is simply dumb for them.
