      • 4 and goal from a foot, down by 1 with 9 minutes left and you don't take the automatic points for the lead?!?!?!?!?!

        • wrong thread. And what are you talking about? I'm always for coaches being aggressive and going for the TD. It's senseless not to go for it from the 1 yard line. You're not going to get that close to the endzone easily again.

          • Wrong, Albert. When it's the 4th quarter and you're down by 1, YOU TAKE THE POINTS.

With 9 minutes left? What's the point of being up by 2? I'd rather be up by 6.

If you want to have this debate, I'll refer you to Greg Easterbrook's discussion of why coaches should almost ALWAYS go for it in 4th and short situations. You're at the 1 yard line... what's the chance of getting back into that position again? It's much easier to get into field goal range later.

Think about it. You get a TD, you're up by 6... worse case scenario, you fail to score, you put the opposing offence at their own 1 yard line. Who wants to bet a safety or a 3 and out is upcoming with fantastic field position for your offence on the next possession? And that's even if you can't muster a single yard and get the TD!

you go for it. But coaches are overly conservative and more worried about reducing the margin of defeat than winning a game to think this out.

argue against the logic. I'll gladly try to get that measly 1 yard knowing that even if I don't get it, I'm forcing the opposing offense to start at their own 1 yard line which is a recipe for a safety or a 3 and out.

FG's aren't a sure thing either, even from the 1 yard line.

Have some guts. Be aggressive not a girly man relying on the leg of your kicker.

You go up by 2 and the other team has 9 minutes to march down the field and win with a FG. You score a TD and you force them to score a TD in response. If you don't get the TD, you can shut them down at their own 1 yard line and come right back to score, while also taking time off the clock.

                        • In reply to your edit: with 9 minutes left, you have to assume that both teams will have at least one possession. Given that, you take the points because it gives you the most flexibility to react to the situation as it develops.

Going for the TD let's you FORM the situation, not react to however it develops. Either you get a TD and you force them to come back down and score a TD, or you stuff them at their own 1 yard line. I'd rather have control over my fate than flexibility in how to react to how things develop outside of my control.

                            • Or...you don't score, give up a 99 yard touchdown drive, and have no options at all.

Hmm... let's see the likelihood of a 99 yard touchdown drive, especially versus the chance of a 1 yard gain for a TD.
