Hmmm, check again on Mark Grace. He had more hits than any other player in the 90's, and since you love this stat so much , posted a 112 OPS+. Just because he couldn't hit the ball to the fence doesn't mean that he wasn't a good player...
I don't think he's better than Delgado, I just think that the logic of a "glut of great players" has to be tempered by the idea that some of them weren't THAT great, and were only very good. Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks...

119 OPS+ actually. Are you seriously trying to use a 119 OPS+ as meaning he deserves to be in the conversation as one of the best 1B of the 90s
Wow. Just... wow.
You do realize that means he was only 19% better than the average player. That's decent, but hardly to be considered with the rest of the great 1B. Power does mean something.
To put that in perspective, a 120 career OPS+ is what Paul O'Neill had. Another player not in the same level.
I'll list the career OPS+ of the players you suggested:
Thome: 146
Palmeiro: 132
McGwire: 162
Helton: 141
Bagwell: 149
Grace: 119
Ortiz: 134
Pujols: 172
Which one doesn't fit (on the low end)?
Oh, and you'll note, Delgado's OPS+ is above both Palmeiro and Ortiz, and not far from Helton.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Palmeiro does (steroids or no, I don't care). Helton probably needs to put in a few more good years (he's only played in 1800 games, after all). Ortiz, no, he hasn't played enough and seems to be fading fast (though since he helped Boston win the WS twice, he'll likely get in regardless )... which kinda leads me to another point. If Delgado played most of his career with the Yankees, he'd be considered a no brainer and probably 1st ballot.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I can certainly agree with that last statement (although 1st ballot is an overstatement IMHO).
Are you steroid-agnostic, or do you just like Raffy? How do you feel about McGwire, Bonds and Sosa?Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

Steroid-agnostic. McGwire, Bonds, and Sosa should all go in (Sosa being most "on the wire").“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

It's not just about the stats. It's about the perception of how good they actually were.Last edited by Flatlander Fox; October 6, 2009, 12:04.Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks...

Chokers.
Was Polanco's play on the tie run in the 10th as pathetic as it sounded on radio?Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

I don't remember that, but Raburn (though he had a great throw later) totally miffed a catch earlier (8th or 9th inning maybe?) that was tough, but he probably should have gotten. Could have saved a run.Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012

At least now in the future when people talk about big chokes down the stretch, the 69 cubs will have some company. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple
