  • What a game last night! Wow, see saw action and then finally in the bottom of the 12th, the home team wins. And I guess Miggy Cabrera made some of it up with his 2 run shot.

Why should any get left out?

It's not just about the stats. It's about the perception of how good they actually were.
And that's exactly what the sabermetric revolution was designed to combat.

      • That was a really, really fun baseball game. 12 innings of high drama. Questionable managerial moves, umpire calls (or non-calls), good defense, bad defense, good baserunning, bad baserunning, pitching into and out of jams...

Game 1 in NY tonight. I will, unfortunately, miss most of it. Let's go Yankees!

I saw that live and was stunned he didn't get to that ball. Off the bat, I thought it was a DP grounder, but it got through. Somehow. I'm not really sure what happened there.

Well according to the stats put up on ESPN there are only 5 teams to have been up 7 in September and still lose the division. Tigers and Mets recently, and then Pirates and NY Giants (twice) 50+ years ago. So I suppose the Cubs don't quite measure up.

            • Based on that criteria yeah, but that's not my definition.
You go to other sites that don't cherry pick it that way, and it's different.

The chubs were up 9 1/2 game in mid august. Then didn't miss by one game, the finished 8 behind.

And of course living in Chicago and having to listen to NY fans remind us continually about this does bias our thinking a touch on this subject I was 15 at the time, and was sufficiently tramatized.

On the radio description, the announcers said, in essence: "Should have been an easy DP. Polanco was so focused on getting to the bag for the force, he just took his eye off the ball and it went through."

At that point it doesn't matter, same outcome either way.

Plus I think I heard elsewhere that this was the first time a team was up 3 games with 4 to play and still lost.

                      • I heard that too somewhere but I can't remember where exactly.
But If I remember where I am when I wake up, it's a good day.
As I said, the cubs have company now.

                        • Unbelievable... A great season is basically over because the Cards can't hit lefties and Matt Holliday can't catch...

                          • Holy ****, I couldn't believe Holliday dropped that ball. That was the final out of the game, would have sent it to StL tied 1-1, but he drops it, the Dodgers come back and basically series over.

Wasn't even a hard catch at all to make!
