  • Ummm, I'd bet that everyone on Apolyton is also an established liar. Therefore I side with Tejada on this one

    • I think EPW is mocking the reactions to A-Rod's supposed "tipping".

        • And the Dodgers get Thome from the White Sox and Garland from the Diamondbacks:

The Dodgers have acquired Jim Thome and Jon Garland for the stretch run.

Apparently they are going to have Thome come off the bench and split time (I'd imagine) with Loney. Garland will pitch every 5th day (after Kuroda went down the Dodgers needed some pitching help big time)

It also appears that the White Sox dealt Contreras to the Rockies.

          • I think I'm good with this - we're basically done anyhow, and I don't mind getting a bit of extra money for next year (ie, whatever we didn't pay on Thome's salary this year - I didn't see how much cash we gave them, but somebody owes nearly $2.5MM of his salary still). This way Rios/Dye/Quentin will all get regular playing time, which will hopefully lead to their improved performance.

Sort of odd that we traded him for a 2006 draft pick who's hitting poorly in High-A ball [ie, a bag of peanuts and a hotdog], but I suppose the salary relief is worth it. Contreras oddly enough yielded a much better pick (a 2008 draft pick doing reasonably well in AAA).

            • So the NL West has gotten quite busy on Waiver wire deals (this Monday was the last day to add a player so that he'll be eligible for the playoffs). Giants got Brad Penny, Colorado got Jose Contreras, and the Dodgers got Jon Garland and Jim Thome. I think the Dodgers win (and they were looking good for the NL West win to begin with). Giants with Penny added very nicely to their potential playoff rotation.

              • I'm not sure Penny is in their playoff rotation - he's at best the 4th best starter [and I'm a huge fan of 3 man rotations in the playoffs]. We'll see how he pitches in SF, though - the 4th starter would pitch at home in every series, since SFO is likely only a wildcard team.

                • He's probably going to be used for long relief in the Divisional Series, but if they get to the NLCS or beyond, 4th starters usually pitch at least one game.

                  • Tell that to the 2001 Diamondbacks

Seriously, I wouldn't pitch beyond three if I were the Giants. Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Lincecum, Cain, Lincecum, Cain [or Zito with Cain-in-relief if there's no extra day off between Cain 2 and Cain 3]. Heck, I'd use Sanchez as my fourth before Penny anyhow...

                    • The main difference is that Lincecum and Cain are still VERY young pitchers (25 and 24 respectively) and you don't want to ruin their arms. Schilling and Johnson were grizzled vets who had all that milage on their arms and could take it.

And while Penny has been really sucky in Boston (I wonder what the Hell is up with their pitching coach this year), he has been very good in the past in the NL with Florida and LA.

                      • Meh, pitchers are wimps nowadays. You can pitch every four days for a couple of weeks without 'ruining your arm'.

And Randy Johnson has been very good in the NL in the past also...

                          Ask the Cubbies .

Randy Johnson is 5 million years old as well . Looking at Smoltz's two starts with the Cardinals, I have a feeling Penny may be able to regain old form.

                          • Yes, a sample size of two is highly useful for future predictions [in response to both comments!]

                            • The sample size of two has been highly impressive so far compared with his Boston sample size.

And there is a reason why younger pitchers have been so much more protected in this era... mostly because of how many blew their arms out according to the data.
