you see this, and the 'mainstream' media following up with 'is it OK to punch a nazi?' articles, encapsulates the problem the left faces very nicely, and it's very depressing. it's as if this election has taught people nothing.

first of all, richard spencer isn't a nazi. i would hesitate to even call him a fascist. moreover, he's not leading brownshirts down the street intimidating people and smashing things up, nor is he calling for or encouraging violence, things which would justify direct action in my opinion; he is simply expressing a controversial opinion, one which i and most people disagree with wholeheartedly, in a peaceful way. to respond to that with violence is itself an affront to democratic values; furthermore, it is extremely politically naïve. while a masked man punching a 'nazi' will doubtless get a lot of cheers on social media, many people outside of those bubbles will watch the video and see a man being sucker punched for speaking his mind. this incident, and the subsequent coverage of it, will introduce a lot people to richard spencer and his ideas. he will gain the publicity he craves, and if his opponents respond to his arguments with 'NAZI!' and fists, then he will look like the reasonable one in many people's eyes.
