Meaning? It is quite obvious from a number of statements that noone intends to treat the UK lightly in the coming negotiations.

Where are you assuming weaknesses on part of the EU that should make it a worse situation for us than for them?

      • So, when's the next Scottish independence referendum?

        • I think both the UK and the rest of the EU are hurt by this. I'm just not sure which one's worse off. Ignoring the benefit of making an example of the UK (which might make others think twice) both parties could reduce the damage by attempting to retain as much free movement of goods, services, people and capital as possible between the EU and the UK.

Beyond the disruptions to trade, investment and migration that will harm both sides, I worry that the EU has lost a significant counterweight to self-destructive regulatory creep driven by the core countries, which in the end might be the most significant impact felt by either side.

The Swiss seem to be doing fine. I don't see why that would be different for Great Britain. Yes, there will be an adjustment period, but the Pound is already off the lows, and didn't dip below 1.35 USD.

They should appreciate longterm vs the USD.

A big part of what's made the EU viable is that it keeps adding people. Now it's hit it's peak awhile back and has worked through the benefits of expansion. Where is Brussels to go now, now that it's left with Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal, all of whom are floundering and Germany and France who are carrying the show. Unless the Norwegians (who won't enter), or the Swedes (who won't enter), if the EU were struggling before, what now?

And right on cue, Le Pen demands #FREXIT.

            • You are mistaking a statement about changes for one about levels. I think that long term you are talking about an economic impact of on the order of 1 percent of gdp (that is a half assed guess). The UK and the EU will both continue to be fine in any absolute sense.

              • I for one will be buying pounds if I can get in at 1.35 or thereabouts.

It's even more ****ing annoying seeing all the conservative writers on this side of the pond going YAY BREXIT! without realizing that it is not, in any way, remotely conservative.
Yeah, it is conservative. Britain chooses for herself rather than Brussels. How would you feel if the US had no control over it's immigration, over it's market, etc. There is nothing saying that the UK cannot continue to bring in immigration.

Also - the problem is that the benefit of immigration has been abused by Labor for years, rather than bringing people in to help the UK become more productive, the agenda has been to transform Britain into something else. Londonistan is a reality. I can't see a conservative who believes in natural liberties supporting sharia.

Not with Le Pen calling for #FREXIT. Total GDP of the European Union was about 19 trillion. Great Britain alone was responsible for 2.7 trillion of that. The EU has lost about 14 percent of it's economy in one stroke.

                  • Well done UK.

Saving Europe again. (and yourself too - for all the wrong reasons I am sure, but the correct choice)

                    • It is amazing how the ungovernable EU has the support of supposedly "intelligent" people, here and elsewhere.

The true functioning of the "superstate" and its inability to change at all was demonstrated rather well since 2008. How many more years does one need to realize that such an institution is irreparable?

As if there is a threat of UK invading Europe.

What about the idea that the EU is governed democratically, that the institutions are transparent, and that people voting in their nation states have means to influence the central decisions that concern them.

Gosh if only there were an institution that allowed people to do that.
