  • So, asked and answered. I will not engage you further.
By your logic whatever everyone agreed to would be right. What argument is there for social change, JR?

No. Hating the race of the attacker instead of just the attacker is prejudice. Prejudice based on race is racist.

Even if the prejudice is just something that's felt and not acted on? How would you know unless the other person told you how they felt?

I agree with you mostly, that acting on these feelings is prejudice, because that specific person hasn't done anything to you. And that's how the troubles really get started. One person hurts another, and then the retaliation comes later.

But feelings? Doing things that take you out of bad situations? That seems different to me. We have feelings for a reason and I think telling victims that being angry at black folks in general is racist is going to hinder recovery.

People need to be able to express their feelings without getting instantly shut down. Even ones that are perceived as 'bad' or 'wrong'. If they aren't dealt with then people end up acting on them.

I'm surprised there's not more commentary about that.

I really feel deaf folks get a raw deal these days.

How could prejudice that is felt not be prejudice? You yourself are using the term "prejudice" to describe it.

We are discussing a hypothetical with explicit givens. The explicit givens being that the person hates black people because they were attacked by a black person. That is why in the situation we know it is prejudice, and racist.

Hating black people is not therapeutic.

Maybe because the rest of us aren't prejudiced about them like you are? And yes, because some people think they're morons...

Is prejudice a thought, or an action?

The givens are that a person is angry that they were assaulted and feels angry when they see other black people as it reminds them of their assault.

I've been through grief. Part of grief is dealing with your anger towards the person that you've lost and being able to express that anger - even if the person has done nothing to deserve it. It's a way to work yourself past those feelings.

Same here - you're dealing with someone who has experienced trauma, and has anger associated with it. That anger has to have a place where it can be expressed. Saying, "this trauma shouldnt' make you angry", or "racist feelings are bad" doesn't actually help you deal with the underlying trauma.

This is a bit strange, usually I'm not the person arguing this end of things, and especially not here. Aren't you the folks usually arguing against repression? What's different about these feelings?

There's a lot of rubbish out there that's being taught that's simply reinforcing these problems. The big one that I see that's starting to trip everyone up is the idea that spoken words have nothing to do with print ones.

Odd thing, I spotted that in a textbook that I've had from the 60s. Will see that in education textbooks today.

Deaf kids are being taught today that they should be empowered by having a language of their own. And that society should accommodate them with their needs. The problem is that this isn't working. They aren't getting the education that they need to succeed.
