Well, the founder John Smith was a convicted con-man. Unfortunately all the courthouses where he was tried seemed to magically burn down within a few years of his founding the LDS.

I should have suggested L. Ron Hubbard.

              • The nominations are in and the voting is complete. In the 500+ post category, "Christian business owners . . ." has been named among the most inane, repetitive, and overall worthless threads in Poly history.

So without further ado, here are the winners of...

The Threadies -- Best in Thread Awards

Strange Bedfellows Award -- Tie between two teams: Team Dictionary (Aeson and Kidicious) and their mortal enemies, Team Scripture (BK, Imran, and Sava). All the sweeter for its "that will never happen" unpredictability.

Sweet Irony Award -- To Imran, for his pre-Aeson statement: "Yes, a reinterpretation of Scripture doesn't mean that you don't still hold to what was written in Scripture. You are just interpreting the text in a new and fresh way." (Post 221)

Truer Words Were Never Spoken Award -- To Kidicious, for: "You're talking nonsense, and wasting my time." (Post 252)

Truth In Advertising Award -- To Aeson, for the deceptively non-controversial "Mormons are Christian by the dictionary definition of the term." (Post 262)

Loss of Credibility Through Misspelling Award -- To Ben Kenobi, for "premiss" (numerous incidents)

Best Name for a Rock Band Award -- To Sava, for "Cavernous Anus" (Post 371)

Height of Irony Award -- To Kidicious, for "You better learn what words mean..." (Post 372)

Well Then You're 100% Half-Wrong Award -- To Sava for "53% of white evangelicals polled said Mormons aren't Christian." (Post 414)

One Letter Makes All The Difference Award -- Jointly to BK and Aeson for "heresay vs heresy" (narrowly beating out "Mormon vs. moron")

All Evidence To The Contrary Award -- To Kidicious, for "Logic isn't a game."

Universal Truth Award -- To C0ckney, for "You are too stupid to understand a simple sentence."

That's Why We Love Him Award -- To Kidicious, for "Even the owner is a troll." (Post 462)

Possible Cosmic Truth Award -- To giblets, for "you're all going to burn in hell" (Post 509)

Tom Cruise "Clear" Award -- To The Mad Monk, for "I should have suggested L. Ron Hubbard." (Post 512)

The 'What Were We Talking About?' Award -- To MrFun, for demonstrating that even a standard "MrFun quotes the liberal Internet" thread can reach 500 posts. (Post #1)

                  clearly a divine judgment.

(eg. Mormons believes something divine and magical about Jesus's birth. Not about Joseph Smith.)
Of course you think it silly, but the thing is, that term has a very specific meaning, and if you're not using it to refer to a specifically Catholic doctrine concerning Mary's state of grace, you're using it wrong. It's as if, addressing scientists, you said, "acceleration, speed, pretty much the same, and 'speed' is shorter and easier to say."

Ironically, only in the dictionary. Not in this thread (which is why it won over Mormon/moron).

                        Good catch, N35t0r!

it was hard at times and we had to beat off some stiff competition but we did it. i'm very pleased with the award but mostly i'm delighted to have played a part in this inane thread. i would like to thank my mother and my father without whom i would not be here today etc.

                          • You and Imran don't qualify as Christians the way the Bible defines the word.
Please elaborate on this thesis. I'm curious as to how you arrived at a conclusion that says that the bible teaches that you are a Christian, but I am not.

                              • No, that you would need me to inform you about them makes you stupid.
It's your thesis. If you can't find evidence supporting your thesis that the Catholic church has changed her doctrine, it's not me who's stupid.

Obviously not. If it did, there wouldn't have been any debate
That's sort of the point here Aeson. There isn't a debate. Brigham Young did teach it and claimed he learned it from Joseph Smith. And I'm far more likely to rely on Brigham Young to teach me what Mormonism actually believes than Aeson.

You have no authority here on this topic, whereas Brigham Young does.

I don't use the Book of Mormon. You brought it up. It's irrelevant to what we were discussing.
Not at all. It's very relevant. Christians don't add a whole new bible to the existing Bible, so what is the purpose for Christians, of the Book of Mormon, other than to introduce novel doctrines and to form your own church?

Christians are not Jews, and have different scriptures. Why do Mormons claim to be Christian but do not use the same books? Makes no sense to me.

You clearly don't understand anything about the LDS Church
And you're the expert? I love how you claim authority you don't possess.

Just because you've heard of Young but not of Pratt doesn't change that.
I'm not claiming that Young is authoritative because I believe him to be so. I'm claiming that Brigham Young is authoritative to Mormons. This isn't exactly a controversial claim here.

I'm saying the dictionary definition is the dictionary definition
Once again, why should we bother with the dictionary? Why would we consider the dictionary to be authoritative on this point?

You really can't read, can you? That has nothing to do with what you quoted. It's not even in the same ballpark
You asserted that I believed in the priesthood of all believers. Something that I haven't believed since 2004 or so.

I responded to p oint out you had just said that every Catholic who has ever said anything is the Magisterium
No. You claimed specifically that I stated EVERYONE who was Catholic was a member of the Magisterium. This is false. The Catholic church is very clear that only priests and bishops comprise the Magisterium of the Catholic church.

if you're going to pretend there's something important about ordination,
Question - do you believe there's something important about Marriage?

I'm arguing that Mormons are Christian by the dictionary definition of the term.
And... I'm arguing that the dictionary (and Daniel Webster) is not a reliable source as to what constitutes a Christian.

I suggest you actually address this argument rather than simply namecalling me as 'dishonest' when I have simply challenged one of your presuppositions.

                                Why is a dictionary authoritative?
