Slave holding was certainly terrible, but the tendency to ostracize people for absolutely no reason didn't help them out much. How different would history have been in Alcibiades had been able to lead the Sicilian campaign instead of fleeing trumped up charges of blasphemy? Or if Socrates hadn't been prosecuted for blasphemy?
