I had little interest in art, and the '10,000 paintings of the same thing' I can understand as I was like that to an extent. What I now appreciate are the stories behind why they were painted, the patrons involved, the evolution of techniques used, the science of the materials used, the politics of the day, the symbology on show, the innovation etc. The reason I got to appreciate those things is my wife wrote a thesis on the stuff and was an excellent tour guide.

To dismiss the art as all the same is a great disservice. If you say you find the history, the politics and the science behind it boring as well, then I'd have more acceptance for the stance that it is boring to you.

Now, you can see and study this remotely but being immersed in the location that generated that art has an added value. A museum like the Louvre has less interest to me than a small church in Siena with some reliquaries because it is more immersive to me. As a parallel, would you say you wouldn't go to Auschwitz because you can study it and view it on the internet? Being there makes a difference if it's in an original environment. The Elgin marbles would be a better experience if they were back at the Parthenon (but probably not for long as they would be sold off or let to decay )

Actually the louvre was a great experience but admitendly I was very young like 10 years old and was left gaping at the plump of the rennesance paintings (a very stark contrast to the ascetic orthodox icons I was used to)

Man, I was really hoping for a more biting response. I claimed you weren't human and even erroneously said art goes back hundreds of thousands of years. (I misremembered. Blombos Cave is only 70,000-100,000 years old.)

There's plenty of stuff I like to see cause it's cool or the story behind it is interesting to me. I don't find italian history at any point following the roman empire schism interesting in the slightest.

Also, I don't really care about visiting lots of different places. What I'm really looking for here is some place to go that has a high density of interesting touristy things to do that I won't be able to do without both the time and money that I will shortly have available to me.

Bull****, there are a lot more than just paintings of Mary and Jesus.

Just because you are ignorant of it, does not mean there is not an abundance of it. For example, City States had symbology unique to themselves such as animals (lions, wolves, foxes etc) and these took priority in paintings and sculpture on display to stamp civic pride.

You might if you just read his slop never believe that Italy had given the world the Southern European Renaissance, a reawakening of interest in pagan Graeco-Roman mythology, superb equestrian statuary, excellent portraiture, stunning landscapes and the use of perspective.

Those paintings are boring. We're in the age of movies and video games. The appeal of looking at paintings is pretty low for the non-pretentious.

Curious how anti-Christian Dauphin is arguing for Christian art. I personally wouldn't listen to his opinion on it either. It's like asking for albert's opinion on culture. You just know that it's going to suck.
