The vatican is filled with roman stuff.
Although when I went there, there was a que spanning two blocks so a bit of patience is required (or an italian friend. then you manage to cut through and go in the front in two minutes )

My dad visited Italy last summer and found it to mostly be boring as ****. I don't think I'm going to visit there, since he and I are generally on the same page regarding these things. But he may not have visited Tuscany. I'll ask him.

I'm a lot more interested in Roman-type stuff than Renassaince type stuff, so if there is cool things to see from the Roman era that is still standing (Colosseum I guess?) then it might be worth a trip.

Rome is full of history, just like Jerusalem. You could visit Rome and Istanbul, for example, and visit some places in Greece on your way for more ancient history stuff. If you're not interested in experiencing Europe itself, that's something I would recommend.

I've never once been to an art museum I found remotely interesting. I used to think modern art was shit. I've now become enlightened. Fine art in general is shit. (Performing art like music and theater is good.)

I'd buy a painting as a wall decoration, but I won't go out of my way to see one.

That's a bizarre attitude and seems more or less equivalent to saying "I don't like music" or "I don't like reading." Fine art is kind of a fundamental aspect of human culture, literally going back hundreds of thousands of years. Not liking (any of) it just might mean you're not human.

It's not that I don't like any of it, it's just that stuff like paintings and photographs don't interest me enough to go to a museum to see it. And at every art museum I've been to (which is actually quite a few), the appealing paintings/pictures/sculptures/whatever are only maybe 1 in every 20 at best. The vast majority is total crap.

The fact that my dad toured a bunch of art museums in Italy--supposedly a good place for art museums--and was bored to tears at each suggests that going to Europe for the art museums is a great way to waste my time and money.

Man, I was really hoping for a more biting response. I claimed you weren't human and even erroneously said art goes back hundreds of thousands of years. (I misremembered. Blombos Cave is only 70,000-100,000 years old.)
