It isn't an accident by the way that the Republicans made no major screwups or gaffes. They learned from 2012. There are a number of articles circulating about the centralization of the GOP senate leadership and donor groups in recruiting relatively moderate candidates, training them not to talk about rape or abortion, etc. and keeping on message.

Which explains why Joni Ernst was outspokenly prolife on the campaign trail from day one? Or is that just another inconvenient fact that you disregard because it doesn't support your narrative that the only people who can win election are pro abortion?

My actual position on the matter isn't wrong at all; Ben's just (probably deliberately) misinterpreting it as usual. I never said only pro-abortion people could win. My point is that Republicans can win more easily when the megaconservatives aren't the ones on the ticket. The Republican leadership recognized this and worked very very hard to keep the crazies off the ballot. They also did a good job of keeping the nominees on message.

The real lesson here is that avoiding saying stupid **** to the press is probably a good strategy. It also doesn't hurt to have a good ad to introduce yourself with. And the last GOP moderate to win was George Bush with his "compassionate conservatism." In Virginia, if the moderate candidate had won the primary last year we'd have a Republican governor.
