I see Ben's reputation for stating factual errors that twist things to his advantage remains intact - especially as 1988 WASN'T the 6th year of Reagan's presidency - 1986 was and that had a +8 gain for the non-presidental party.

In fact, here are the complete results of non-presidental party gains since senate voting started in the 6th years of presidencies.

1926 +7
1938 +7
1950 +5
1958 +15
1966 +3
1974 +4
1986 +8
1998 +0
2006 +5

That +0 in 1998 really skews the average though. Admittedly this year is the 2nd best - but only somewhat above the average.

Mid-term elections are basically a trumped up courtesy flush: politicians aren't done taking a shit on the people, but they also don't want to clog the bowl and actually have to deal with what they produced.

Even being a REP, I'm not really celebrating this cycle as a resurrection of the party. This was an ANTI status quo vote, (and facilitated by lack of voting) not a pro REPUBLICAN vote.

And for those of you that have been whining about the "NO" party, it now looks like it was a good strategy. The repubs don't seem to have tainted by it. Now is the time to change that so we have something set our hats on in 2016 (but past experiences makes me not hold out hope). And it should be humorous as the DEMS become the NO party.
