DD conveniently did not note the extremely obvious fact that minority voting was dramatically higher nationwide in the period his link so conveniently measures, 2006-2010. You know, when the US had its first serious minority candidate for President.

It would be interesting to see how minority registration and turnout compares between Voter ID states and others during that time, but that is conveniently not covered in the linked article.

This would disprove the assertion that voter ID laws are effective at suppressing the minority vote. Clearly, if voter ID laws were in fact effective, why did they fail in 2008?

Better question - why are democrats opposing it if they know that it's an ineffectual measure?

      • FTR JM just so I'm clear. Are you actually alleging that there exists a large population of voters with jobs, don't drive, lack a bank account, never cashed a check from their work, never bought alcohol or tobacco, never rented a PO Box, since we're worried about the poor these people have also never applied for welfare? Is this really a large cohort of people that lack the ability/willingness to get a valid ID?

        • Studies show that as many as 11 percent of eligible voters do not have government-issued photo ID. That percentage is even higher for seniors, people of color, people with disabilities, low-income voters, and students. Many citizens find it hard to get government photo IDs, because the underlying documentation like birth certificates (the ID one needs to get ID) is often difficult or expensive to come by.

Well if you are interested in falsifying the theory, provide evidence of a downturn in minority participation in Indiana (the state where such laws were 1st approved by the SCOTUS in 2005)?

Just shining a light on what could be a cherry-picked story, DD, mostly because Bennyboy immediately started using it as gospel proof.
No one should be surprised at increases in minority voting in the US across that timespan, regardless of state.

Well if 11 percent of voters don't have ID as kentonio is claiming it's surprising that more people would vote after being required to show ID.

Not at all, I'm certainly going to lose. I gave the US people far too much credit, and didn't give the Republicans enough for their ability over the last 6 months to not reveal their true intentions.

it's not as hard as you might think. I live in a moderately small town and I can think of three places where I can cash a payroll check without needing to give id. Also, I think you're grossly overestimating the zeal in which the guy behind the counter at the local bodega does his job.

No, I'm afraid you're going to have to look for someone else to vote for this time.

Seriously. Can you answer the question? The political commercials are saying they will wage a war on women and let police murder black teens. Is that what you mean?
