Serb, how can Russia become an alternative Europe?
Russia, a poet has said, is a continent by itself and that's true.
But population/production wise the math doesn't work.
500 million and 160-180 million?
Religion doesn't make the distinction either.
Greece, Bulgaria, Romania (maybe later even more "orthodox" countries)?
Besides religion doesn't play such an important role within Europe.
However, I see the will for a euroasian economic union or a different path, that's fine, I don't think that should be in opposition to anything.
I still think it's stupid that there are such tensions and I hope they will be resolved because at the end of the day what's important is the wellbeing of the people whose interests are really not that different.
Let's say "enemies" are always "Within the gates"!

That's why the West hates us so much no matter what political system we have.
I haven't meant math or anything of that kind, I was talking more about spiritual stuff. The West is mostly Catholic/Protestant (Greece or Romania don't make such of a difference). Religion largely impacts nation's culture, traditions and spirit (if you like) century by century. So, Russia as an Orthodox nation was an alternative to the Western Catholic/Protestant civilization from the begging. Then add a Communism as an alternative to Capitalism. Like it or not, good it or bad - that was an alternative, an attempt to build a just society. And Soviet culture, values and way of life were quite different from the western ones and it was an alternative. Now Russia is safe harbor of Christian and if you like conservative values, aside decaying west with its "freedom of sin", drug legalization, sodomy, pedophilia, etc.

That I understand. The west vs the east debate.
There always was an undercurrent of that in Greece as well particularly among the more conservative circles, but not only.
However from my experience, catholics for example (the devout ones) are more conservative than your average orthodox.
When they say no sex before marriage, they mean it (whereas we are like meh)

OK. But I'll point out a few things.
Marxism (where communism was based) was a german invention mainly, one could say.
East Germany "made fun" (I say that in a good spirit) of Soviets because they thought they (east germans) implemented socialism far better.
Italy and Spain had very good chances of becoming communist anyway. External intervantion stopped that.
France had a huge communist wave.
Even today eastern Europe is considered something different than western Europe despite religious affiliations.
Just pointing this out.
Also scandinavian countries are considered socialist by some people.Last edited by Bereta_Eder; August 20, 2014, 08:57.

Still, you aren't a Christian. I bet your fellow Canadians of Ukrainian origin (who are either a nazis escaped to Canada to seeking asylum for their war crimes or their descendant) have already converted you into their Satan sect. I bet they've already explained to you that Ukrainian people are the ancient Arians who came from Venus 140 000 years ago and that Jesus was ethnic Ukrainian, right?
Just going to point out that most Ukrainian immigrants to Canada arrived before the First World War. Feel free to resume your bull****-fest now.(\__/)

I think Serb is saying what a recent russian philosopher is saying, one who is trying to "marry" communism and orthodoxy.
It's very reactionary (and a bit erroneous since religion and communism were always at odds)
I still fail to see how a russian kid trying to find his way through a merciless nepotistic environment is so different than an english kid being asked to pay 2000 euros for a london one room studio appartment while trying to avoid nearby streets. Or a french kid with nothing to do in the banlieus.
