  • "I will take my rest and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs. For afore harvest, when the bud is perfect and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks and take away and cut down the branches." (Isaiah 18:4-5)

    How about this one?

Jesus seemed to think substance use was okay:

"Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; that which cometh out of the mouth defileth a man." (Mat. 15:11)

    • about the whole "meat" business, Paul explains

I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. … For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. (Paul: Romans 14:14,17)

      More:
He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man and oil to make his face to shineth. (Psalm 104:14-15)
It's pretty clear cut. It doesn't get more clear than that.

      • So have cars. Doesn't mean that there's no longer 'cars' around.
But I bet a man from when cars first came out wouldn't be able to drive a car made today. They've changed that much.

You gave exceptions to those I listed while I listed what's now normal. That's how much it's changed. The exceptions are now the rule.

i think i see the source of your confusion here. you have confused the verbs 'be' and 'become'. consult a dictionary in the first instance.

Christ, someone from the 20s could figure out what a car is today because he's seen cars. Are you really arguing that someone who's seen and lived through marriages, many of them, wouldn't be able to recognize a marriage for what it is today?
this is just bizarre. you claimed that marriage hadn't changed (post) 86 and i showed that it had (post 90). you even accepted it (post 109).

Matrimony, between husband and wife, again - walk into a random marriage - has it changed sufficiently? No. And that's my point. The same structures are still all there, notwithstanding the desire of some to argue that it's different. Sure, some folks, play at marriage, but it doesn't change the reality of what marriage actually is and that it's not changed.

Painting over the car and calling it something else isn't going to change the fact that it's still a car.
i have given a definition of marriage, and you have given one. yours however, is simply a denial of the legal reality, which in itself is a reflection of the social reality, that exists in many western countries.

to use your (admittedly very poor) analogy, now that the car has been painted pink, it is you who is trying to deny that it is a car and claim that a true car cannot be pink.

              Still checkmate.
no. your premise is both dishonest and ludicrous.

Then you'll have to actually refute the argument that marriage in general has changed sufficiently to be unrecognizable to an outside observer from Roman times. Instead of bleating, "of course it's different". No, it's not. I can walk into a wedding of a different culture and figure out what's going on without someone telling me, even if I've never been in that culture before.

This is actually an argument from anthropology! You should be jumping all over this! I'm arguing there are basic features of marriage that transcend cultural differences.
you have simply not understood what i've said. the people who wrote the bible existed in a certain context, in fact diverse ones at different historical moments. the wrote about an enormous range of subjects, be it homosexuality, marriage, diet, usury, dress and so forth; indeed one might say that the bible provides a complete guide for every aspect of life. the authors however, could not see the future, or indeed, much of the past or present, so they wrote based on the narrow contexts which they lived in. almost all forms of human action and interaction, including marriage of course, are shaped by the particular contexts, historical, economic, political, cultural and social in which they are performed.

these contexts have changed (through continuous processes) since the bible was written, and therefore we can say the bible's 'guide for life' is not useful to us, not only as a matter of fact, but also as an inevitable consequence of its remoteness. we can also point to specific examples where it is not just useless and irrelevant, but actually harmful.

                          • The gods of old were cruel and self serving. Then there comes a god who advocates love, compassion and forgiveness. Of course it caught on. Then men corrupt his teachings to serve their ends always.
Maybe another question to be asked is why some people need a clear code of instructions by which to live by (what better to attribute that to a divine will) and others don't want that.

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
