Small town ... if you need more than that to understand why a person would be forced to hide something they don't want everyone to know ... words aren't going to help.

I've been to small towns like that, similar to where I grew up. I've never seen anyone turned away from the corner store precisely because of this understanding, unless there was a prior incident (theft, etc).

Obviously there will be differences between communities. Some are very friendly. Some are already not so friendly to ethnic minorities and gays. Pretending all small towns everywhere are the same is ridiculous.

You could claim preferring chocolate ice cream over vanilla is rooted in genetics but that wouldn't make it as significant as being gay. Of course it's stupid to jail people for something as minor as smoking marijuana but telling people not to smoke marijuana generally isn't as onerous as telling gay people that it's wrong to be gay.

They bring these problems on themselves by choosing to smoke pot. I'm not blaming them for getting put in prison here, just saying that weed is very much a choice (with some rare medical exceptions).

The war on drugs is definitely a bigger problem for taxpayers however.

You could just as easily say, "Gays bring problems on themselves by choosing to suck dick." In fact, that's basically the Catholic Church's position. Are you a convert to Roman Popery now?

Gays are born gay, but they're not born with a **** in their mouths. I was born with a brain chemistry that goes really well with weed, but I wasn't born with a joint in my mouth. There's no reason to rationalize the government doing anything to either group, and there's no reason to diminish the suffering of the hundreds of thousands in prison, right now, for non-violent drug offenses.
