Callous ****-you-got-mine libertarians might be into the whole "stupid people have it coming" approach, but the real reason to let people suffer their own consequences is that for the most part, people make better decisions regarding themselves than they do regarding other people. There are perhaps some who would benefit from the government stepping in and controlling their lives (which entails people making decisions regarding other people), but many many more who who would suffer. On the other hand, children already have someone else making decisions for them.
