the idea of guns for protection is all well and good. however, it's obvious that more guns will lead to more violent deaths and that having more people with guns in a particular situation will make that situation more dangerous.

to give an example. a friend's brother was driving in a city in minas gerais. a guy came up to the car, told him that it was a robbery and order him to get out of the car. my friend's brother, instead of complying, pulled out his gun and shot the robber dead. great, right? the ordinary armed citizen killed the scumbag robber. except, there was a second robber, who my friend's brother mustn’t have seen and he then pulled his gun and shot my friend's brother, killing him. my friend's brother had a wife and two small children. if my friend's brother hadn't had a gun, he would have lost his car but kept his life.

Saying you shouldn't own guns because you might kill yourself with it is just so goddamn stupid I don't know where to start. We're not all on ****ing suicide watch. Do you want to take away our belts and shoelaces too? You can kill yourself with a booze and tylenol cocktail pretty easily. Or by starting a charcoal grill in your bedroom, or running your car in the garage. Besides which, it's not generally the government's prerogative to protect you from yourself in that manner.

How on earth is that relevant to Kenya? It's a poor country, few people can afford to buy guns. The assailants were from Somalia though, where a man isn't a man unless he sports an assault rifle whenever he's out and about. Similar countries include Pakistan and Afghanistan. Whereas you're presupposing that the only correct response is capitulation. You're trusting that a carjacker who's already shown that he's willing to use violence to benefit himself, isn't some kind of sociopath. Is that a risk you're willing to stake your life on?

If every time they carjacked someone, one of them died, it would swiftly stop, at exactly one carjacking.
