I don't think anyone really has a problem with the cops stopping them and checking what's going on, but when shown the documentation to say they are legitimately looking after her they still locked them up.

It's true that black people are far more likely to commit crimes at least in America. If one were to stop profiling, you'd actually be discriminating against every one else - because you'd be treating some people differently from other people. It's not just about the raw numbers, but the proportions. If black people are more likely to commit crimes then it makes sense to profile. It's a rational response to external stimuli, no different then if people were to associate certain actions with other actions.

This is no different then profiling men in general because men are more likely to commit crimes. Is it sexism? Not at all. Most crimes are committed by young men. Is it discrimination when young men receive more scrutiny than others for their actions? No. That a cop is doing such scrutiny is evidence that they are actually doing their job.

You should stop and search someone because you have genuine cause to believe they are doing something wrong, being black alone shouldn't be just cause for a stop and search.
