  • Shutdown over. Republicans blinked.

Sixteen days after a federal government shutdown began and one day before the United States would have exhausted its ability to borrow money, Congress approved a bill to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling until Feb. 7. President Obama has promised to sign the legislation immediately, meaning hundreds of thousands of federal workers could be back at work Thursday.

    True.

    Also true.

My nephew is 9 months old now. I don't think there will be a Republican president until at least when he can vote.

"electoral" hell refers to Presidential elections...

Yup. I hope they try again... and keeping trying up until 2014!

Can you give us a short explanation on why you think deficit reduction is good?

You said "the party is toast". It most definitely is not. Relatively speaking, Congress has more power than the Presidency, and the GOP is poised to continue their advantage there for the foreseeable future.

Currently, the Republicans are like a pack of wild dogs attacking each other. More SuperPAC money from right wing sources goes to attack Republicans than it does Democrats. They have almost no power whatsoever... except to cause shutdowns... for which they get blamed.

They don't control Congress. They have a majority in the House. They control one half of one branch of the government... and maybe the Supreme Court... at times. But Democratic Presidents will be appointing those judges for the next 20 years.

Right now we're witnessing a massive political realignment... not seen since the Dixiecrat revolution.

Senate 2014 race looks likely for R's to pick up a minimum of 3 seats with another three D's listed as Toss up.

R's will definitely retain control of House.

Possible that after 2014 elections that R's will have both chambers of Congress.

You think we have gridlock now?

                      You aren't getting the Senate.

And you'll lose seats in the House... but you won't lose the House.

Sava, you have an absurdly optimistic view of 2014 and beyond. I'm not saying I hope you're wrong.

Me? An optimist? No. I just know how to read a map. This is what I went to school for. Of course there are lots of variables at play... and things can always change. But the trend now is clear.

Also... this happened after the vote in the House today:

House floor reporter (stenographer) Dianne Reidy is rushed off the floor during Wednesday night's votes on a bill reopening the government and raising the debt ceiling. Door keepers and guards escort

Hmmm, it didn't like the embed. There's the sound link. The House stenographer went on a rant about God and Freemasons.

Gotta agree with Sava here. Obama won a huge victory over the house republicans.

I have to agree with his assessment of the future of the republican party.
