and what happened to your biblical principles? You cite Adam and Eve for monogamous marriage but ignore Adam and Eve when it comes to the roles of husband and wife - the spouse makes these decisions, not the folks who are left behind when man and woman become one in the flesh.

If that's 'anguish', then don't get married.
The anguish is losing a loved one to brain death and watching them spend years in that situation, the vow includes the promises we make to our loved ones - like a spouse asking to be released from the prison Terri Schiavo found herself in. But I do have my answer, you would condemn your wife to years of agony waiting around for you to recover from brain death rather than move on and try to find happiness in another relationship.

    • Honest question, why do you keep referring to them by their christian names in this really familiar manner? I'm assuming you didn't personally know any of the people involved, and it comes across as really inappropriate.
To drive home the point that Terri was a person. The informality accentuates the point.

      • but she did need him for that, the family was interfering with her wishes
Is there a piece of paper, written down, anywhere, where Terri Schiavo states that in the event of her incapacitation, she wants to die?

and what happened to your biblical principles?
What of them? People who are starving should be fed. Especially when they are helpless and unable to feed themselves.

You cite Adam and Eve for monogamous marriage but ignore Adam and Eve when it comes to the roles of husband and wife
The same Michael who cheated on his wife while she was still alive, and took up another woman to replace her? You cite 'biblical principles' and then blithely ignore Michael's violation of his own marital union.

        the spouse makes these decisions
What spouse? Michael had a woman in his life that he loved and cared for. That woman wasn't Terri.

The anguish is losing a loved one to brain death
She wasn't brain dead. Brain dead people are on respirators.

like a spouse asking to be released from the prison Terri Schiavo found herself in
When did she ask Michael to do that for her? Are you saying that Terri Schiavo wasn't brain dead and could speak to make her wishes clear to Michael?

you would condemn your wife to years of agony
        Why is it agony, Berz?

than move on and try to find happiness in another relationship.
I'd damn well prefer that she move on and **** her new lover rather than killing me on her way out the door.

        • I hope you're never in that situation Ben.
Being a person with a disability, I changed my will after the Schiavo execution. In the event of incapacitation - I am to be given all basic treatment, including food and water. I specified Terri Schiavo and how I thought it was a horrible way to go where they starved Terri. It's also contrary to canon law.

          So it's all there.

If my wife had told me that she wouldn't want to continue in that situation, I wouldn't tell her I don't believe you, please write it down and get it notarized.
I would, but then my family has always been the practical sort. We had to sort out my father's wishes (and I believe we came up with a good funeral for him). My mother has since revised her will (and revised it again subsequently), to ensure that her wishes will be carried out. Everything is notarized, etc. All by the book. The executor has been notified, it's all been taken care of.

I would be in intense emotional distress holding off the decision as long as he did.
Would you be ****ing another woman and have two kids on the go with her while your wife was incapacitated?

Under those circumstances I would have ended it much sooner based on my wife's wishes. I have told my wife that I wouldn't want to survive under those circumstances (and I didn't do it in writing because I trust her to abide by my wishes) That's what real marriages are.
Would you have taken up with another woman as Michael Schiavo did? Everyone would have been better off had he just checked out the door asap and let her parents look after her. Terri was fortunate to have a loving family who did care, many do not have that advantage.

And yes, I would fight off her Family also. I would honor her wishes. That's how much I love her.
Would you take up with another woman as Michael did, Rah?

You're assuming that he lied about that. How can you know that? You're assuming that since he moved on with his life that he must be a lying scumbag. He may be a lying scumbag, but as with almost everything else, it's not your place to pass judgment.
I feel the evidence warrants that assessment. He had numerous options open to him and he chose the one that deliberately inflicted the most pain on everyone. It would be bitter irony if he ends up in the same situation.

          • Years of legal proceedings would indicate that he was telling the truth there.
That wasn't the question I asked, DD.

Is there a piece of paper with Terri's wishes on it where she specifies that she wanted to die in the event that she was incapacitated?

You know the rules governing usage of first names are different on this side of the pond, don't you? At least, they used to be, I don't know about now. I assumed he was referring to them that way for simplicity's sake, because it's quicker to type "Michael" than "her husband," etc.

              • It's rather odd here too. People who didn't know him personally didn't call George Zimmerman "George." They called him "Zimmerman," "George Zimmerman," or "Mr. Zimmerman," if being more formal. I can't even think of his wife's name off the top of my head. She's usually referred to "George Zimmerman's Wife."

Totally immaterial to the issue at hand. His actions don't invalidate her request.

Well, that too. Schiavo in this case won't distinguish between one or the other. It's not like I called him "Mike" or something like that.

They invalidate his authority to carry out her request. It's like abandoning your captaincy in order to command a different ship. Do you get to make the decisions for your former captaincy? No. What happens then is they appoint someone else to fill the gap.

Nobody forced Michael to take up with someone else. For better or for worse, he chose that. At that point in time - he made the decision to start a new life with another woman. He should have tendered his commission.

                          Immaterial.
OR are you attempting to say that if he had pulled the plug before getting another women that you would have been ok with it?

Only in your narrow minded view. Legally it doesn't. We are all happy that your opinion doesn't matter here.

Ask your wife. See if you think it's immaterial afterwards.

It would have changed his motivation away from self-interest. I actually strongly doubt that Michael would have actually cut the cord if he didn't have his spare wife.

Would it have still been wrong? Yes. But it would be more of a straight up and down argument over the merits of euthanasia.

Only in your narrow minded view.
You can't command two ships. His desire to leave her was evident long before. He should have done the honorable thing and tendered his commission so that she could be adequately provisioned.
