So I'm supposed to be punished for pursuing a field that I'm interested in, and that I have skills in, thinking that I live in a country in where I can pursue the career of my choice?Originally posted by regexcellent View PostYou have exactly the kind of degree I've been talking about so thanks for proving my point.A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

That desribes to a T what I've been complaining about this whole time. Feeling entitled to have a job because you have a degree, even though it's in something you're interested in rather than something that's useful.

So even if we entertain this idea that choices are the end all be all...Originally posted by regexcellent View PostYou have exactly the kind of degree I've been talking about so thanks for proving my point.
You don't think theres a fundamental problem with the college education system that bilks students out of money for useless degrees, by your own outlook on life? Like the real problem is people choose classes offered by the university with departments full of people in that subject...
Your answer of "well not every person should go to college" is ignorant of what employers deem important and fundamental. I am unable to get a large amount of jobs because I lack a bachelors degree, and while my opinion on what is pertinent to job function might be interesting, the fact remains, I am beholden in opportunities by employers requirements, rightly or wrongly.
I find it ridiculous that STEM is the end all be all of valid education in America, or at least is the primrose path to financial security in the country. I mean, what Im constantly seeing is this attitude that people should break themselves to conform to a society, irrespective of situation. God forbid we change things in society or at the very least a government level to adapt to the current circumstances surrounding the citizenry."I hope I get to punch you in the face one day" - MRT144, Imran Siddiqui

If I did have any sense of entitlement, I would believe that I should be given something without having to work for it.A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

There are three fundamental problems:Originally posted by MRT144 View PostSo even if we entertain this idea that choices are the end all be all...
You don't think theres a fundamental problem with the college education system that bilks students out of money for useless degrees, by your own outlook on life? Like the real problem is people choose classes offered by the university with departments full of people in that subject...
1) Government intervention that mutes the price mechanism.
2) Cultural tropes that tell people to pursue their dreams blah blah. It is really really easy to look up the job prospects for a given career ahead of time, much easier than actually going through with four years of college.
3) The continued existence of academic departments that are ideologically committed to education as something other than job preparation.
Fix any of the three and I suspect the other two would wither away and die.
