You gonna stick to your guns and try and rationalize this or are you going to maybe give an inch and think "gee, maybe degree field isnt the end all be all of outcomes in life"

It isn't. Who said it did? That doesn't change the fact that some or easily monetized than others though.

Rationalize, of course. This one's easy: Obama's socialist policies are distorting the market so that the demand for useless degrees is going up.

That's actually true. That's 100% true. That's 100% a function of government guarantees on student loans. Nobody would be able to get a loan for their dumb underwater basketweaving degree if the government didn't back it. If you want to study dumb **** in college do it on daddy's dime.

Actually if one were to make a political statement off of that, it would be an argument to limit the H1B visas tech companies are allowed.

I wish some people in this thread were poor.

Its because you and reg trot out this strawman that there are clear correct and incorrect choices in life vis a vis college and that anyone who opines negatively about a plausible tradeoff of interest vs money should just shut the **** up forever and ever and ever.

A lot of people that are distressed about their future in this economy are more than willing to work hard as evidenced by their commitment to college and graduation. That the opportunities out there are so incongruent with what college is sold as, at least enough so to warrant remark, should make you wonder why people are saying these things or thinking these things.

I do not get how yours and other's reaction is "STFU YOU LAZY LAZY PERSON WHO WANTS EVERYTHING HANDED TO THEM" to any sort of rumbling about how ridiculous it is in america to go through various financial hurdles for basic employment. The mere fact you neither of you can imagine anyone but a disaffected liberal arts or humanities student complaining about this is reflective of how little you care or think about these things. Are you both so incurious about the world?

On to another point: whats the point of providing anything above a comfortable life for your child if invariably it all comes down to their choices they make? It seems that this whole "choice theory" is incompatible with the lengths parents go to give their children a leg up. I know most of you oppose the estate tax upon grounds of "its my money, i earned it, it shouldnt be beholden to the government" but mechanically, it completely invalidates the idea that people get what they get through their own hard work and choice... Theres no accounting for pedigree, parents, and opportunity in your world.

Maybe if people treated college as an investment instead of consumption (very very ****ing expensive consumption that they borrow money for) they wouldn't find themselves in such a mess after they graduate.
I have a Masters degree in U.S. History. After a couple of years total in teaching as an adjunct for a few different colleges, and getting burned out applying for full-time community college teaching positions, I now have a minimum wage job at Staples (oops sorry - one dollar above minimum wage).

After graduating with my Masters seven years ago, I have accumulated interest in my consolidated student loans (thank god I had them locked in at the lowest interest rate at that time). I've tried starting to pay back my loans with low-paying jobs I've had a couple times, but could not afford to keep up that way.

Well this is my current job situation until I find gainful, meaningful employment elsewhere, anyway.

categorically a rich kid wouldnt need student loans, period. Therefore we can start really drilling down into a reasonable guess of how many people you actually hate.

And before I forget to point this out reg, you're an ignorant, insensitive, thoughtless tool for the status quo elite. Congratulations.

You have exactly the kind of degree I've been talking about so thanks for proving my point.

You dont get a right to complain poor boy! Nobody gets to opine about anything unless they're complaining about complainers (and believe poor people deserve it), then its like the superbowl of strawmen.

If you have a college degree, or especially a graduate degree, you are rich ipso facto.
