The concept of this being any actual group is pretty much dead now - right wing militia, left wing militia, arab group, any of them would've claimed responsibility now. The point for those groups is to get publicity; that publicity is lessening by the day now.

It's very much possible it's a single person belonging to [group of your choice] but at that point it's just a crazy person doing crazy person things and it's utterly irrelevant.

I don't think Hawking really has all that much beyond a very crude interface (though I don't know the significant details). But some of this depends on your definition of 'crude' and 'interface'; after all, a keyboard and hands is a brain-computer interface in some sense.

It amuses me that the government is supposedly clever enough to fake huge incidents with the worlds media watching, yet apparently stupid enough to use the same 'actors' and images.

For me it was 9/11. I was only in elementary school at the time--3rd grade, but I knew something was up because a bunch of kids went home early and there were cryptic messages on the PA, and all the teachers looked really upset. The administration decided not to tell us anything but as soon as I got home my mom was super upset, I can't remember if she was crying, but the news was on the television in the living room and I saw the towers collapsing. It was the far and away scariest thing I had seen in my life up to that point. I think I had nightmares about being in a collapsing building that night.

I was at elementary school in CT when Challenger blew up. My first 'global event' memory.

We were in the school cafeteria watching the launch. I remember the smoke trails of the shuttle, explosion, and the SRBs and nothing else (reactions, what we did after, etc).

The only reason I was aware at the time was because a teacher from my school was in the running (or maybe just applied!) for the teachers in space project.
