Sava, thanks for switching back to the old avatar.
I was in elementary school when JFK was killed (and a few years later, MLK). School the next day was cancelled; I watched Jack Ruby shoot Oswald on live TV.
Watergate? '72, and I was in college. But very few people understood the significance of Watergate as it was happening. We were concerned about the Vietnam war. Kent State. The evil that was Nixon. But we didn't dream how true our paranoid fantasies were.
Nixon resignation? Much more impactful! I was still in school, working at the college radio station. I saw the announcement come over the AP wire in real time and made the announcement on air. My little piece of history...
I will never forget it. The teletype machine would ring its bell (sounded like the hotel front desk bellhop bells you see in movies) when important news came in: 3 bells for an "alert" and 4 bells for "urgent." The rare 5-bell signal preceded a "bulletin." The "Nixon resigns" announcement was preceded by the so-called Armeggedon code -- 10 bells! No one had ever heard it before.
Those bellhop bells still give me a little chill.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011
