A friend of mine (half Indian half Thai) was always being urged by his Indian relatives to put on weight as he looked so thin to them (he had a typically gay gym bunny physique, not pumped up, just defined). His Thai relatives always wanted him to keep off the beaches...

I remember seeing a documentary years ago where an African American family went to live with an Indian family in Peru- and they were surprised to find out that a dark complexion was considered a sign of good luck... but they were a bit put out by having to use urine to wash their hair and some weren't keen on eating guinea pigs.

Them, and everyone around them. You shoot 40 bullets at random and they're going to hit something. But drive by shootings apparently fail to hit their intended target way more often than they succeed. It would seem that gangsters are pretty incompetent at the whole assassination thing.

The thing is, killing a dozen people in a drive-by is an awesome way to land yourself in prison. You kill that many people in one go, and the cops will not rest until they find you.

A lot of them don't get found. Nobody saw anything and nobody wants to talk.

8 years ago this Memorial Day, I saw a first-hand example of gangbanger "marksmanship." They tend to show up in and around Mission Beach in San Diego, where there's a lot of family parties and such, and the police show up en masse and first make it uncomfortable for them to stick around, or if that doesn't work, start rousting them. We were at Crown Point, which is a real quiet beach area on Mission Bay, a couple of miles from the typical stupidity fest, and three of them came trotting/staggering/whatever into the park. They were all pretty high, so they decided to give the Glock to the one who was (a) the youngest, most junior one and (b) happened to be the most drunk and stoned.

He moved over to the edge of the beach near where we were (he was not apparently armed, just a drunk idiot, so not worth too much attention), and there happened to be, unfortunate for him, perhaps fortunate for the human gene pool assuming he hadn't bred a few times already, a sewer lift station. So just as he migrates over to our area, a large white City of San Diego Wastewater department van drives up to check on the sewer lift station. Apparently in the stoned recesses of his mind, he must have thought this was a SWAT team. (hint, they don't drive white vans that prominently say "wastewater" on them, and they ain't lookin' for you, bro.) There was a little cliff about four feet high, and he ducked down that, not very gracefully. Then he crouched and hid, but like a gopher in its hole, he couldn't resist seeing what was going on, so he reached into his pocket and tried to get part way up the cut out embankment and slipped. That was when I first paid attention to him, but it wasn't clear he'd done more than stumble, and he wasn't bothering anybody.

Then POP and I turn around real fast, because it's clearly a mid-caliber weapon discharge. He'd reached his hand on the pocket and managed to shoot himself down the length of his thigh. He made it about 10 feet, collapsed face first, got up, staggered about 15 more feet in shock, then was down for good. Dumbass had managed (apparently from the blood trail) to sever the femoral artery and/or vein, so he was bleeding out. He was still alive when the ambulance got there in about five minutes or so, but had unstable vital signs at that point, so likely was dead by the time he got to the hospital.

What I don't understand about this whole thing is that the vast majority of gun control measures I've seen. eg. registering purchases, requiring id for a purchase etc. are designed to make it harder for the kind of gangbangers Alby posts pictures of in here from getting access to guns, whilst allowing responsible citizens to still own them.

Americans in general have a greater degree of paranoia about government than people in most other countries (sometimes that's not a bad thing), and we also seem to have a disproportionate number of tinfoil hat types.

Gravity has a small effect on minor blood flow, so a cut hand may bleed a little faster if it's down at your side compared to up over your head, but the nature of the wound is far more important. In this case, it's a longitudinal wound channel rather than transverse, but in a femoral artery wound in the field, it's kind of like the Titanic hitting the iceberg in 10,000 deep water or 15,000 feet deep. The end result is the same.
