America's Army is an integral step to train the next generation of mech/android operators who will gloat about their number of headshots when we invade whatever's after Iran.

PBS has even more potential in this regard, but it's largely wasted.

If it's a choice between glib cynicism and taking part in the endless not-really-arguments around here where we all talk to the air six inches above each others' heads for fifteen damn pages...there's something to be said for glib cynicism. Every day I see more and more the horrible futility of discussion on both this board and the larger culture. It's not that I'm depressed; I've just come to realize that certain things are fruitless and stupid. That, along with my parenthood, is the main reason I post less these days. We can't have adult conversations about anything. I mostly stay on for the occasional fun one-liner and the few threads that aren't about recycled political/religious arguments. And thank God for the ignore list.

Re: OP, gut the damn military already. We don't need half of what we have now. PBS is fine; if you must reduce it, cut it by 25% or something and be done. There are about a billion other things we could do but won't, but I need to go to bed now.

I dont know how good pbs is but over here in sweden the only radio worht lisiting to are goverment run. When i have my peltors on i can feel my brain melting everytime i slip into a commercial radio. Swedish tv is hilariously inapt but atleast the goverment funded one can turn out a nice documentry once in a blue moon.

I actaully think a media channel free from commercial interests is a vital part of a democratic society.

I think education is just as much a core government function as defense - we don't exactly live in a state of nature.
Then you can happily show me where education is a federal responsibility under the constitution.

Also, the score so far for quality teaching materials in my class is Anamaniacs - 1, Sesame Street - 0.

Trying to fix the budget by going after ****ing pissant PBS is the worst kind of demagoguery.
Easier to cut poodle clothes from your budget than gas. You wouldn't manage your household budget that way - you'd cut the most useless crap first and then, if you still had to cut - start cutting back on the things you do need. Like gas.

Don't let them get you down, Guy. Your attitude is the right one.

While HC will live a life of misery and disappointment due to unreasonable expectations of this world, you and I will wake up every day and know the world is an awful place. It's about setting expectations. HC will be devastated when the barista spits in his no water dirty soy chai, while we will be enormously happy that no ******* crashed his car into ours on the way to work.
