I never understood why the Obama campaign decided to portray Romney as an eeeeevil arch-conservative (which is ridiculous) rather than a craven flip-flopper who will say anything to get elected (which has enough truth in it to be effective).

If he runs to the center to dispel the notion that he's a heartless millionaire who wants to screw over the "middle class" for the sake of helping the rich, then he just looks like more of a flip-flopper.

He's getting away with it because the Republicans are willing to elect anyone but Obama, and for many independents this is their first actual good look at him so they don't have a strong notion of his beliefs. Democrats won't vote for him anyway.

On a primal level, we saw the president reduced to beta-ness, submitting in body language and tone to an alpha dog. He barely even made eye contact with Romney. His behavior was the human equivalent of a tail between one's legs. Simple. They think enough people will buy it. I mean they bought Obama as racial healer and global unifier, here to staunch the rise of the seas like some modern day Canute in 2008. Why not sell Romney as Mr Moneybags, his diametric opposite?
