Yeah, the question came up, was answered and quickly ignored.
And why - because McCain supplied his original long form immediately.
Had Obama done the same, it would have gone done the exact same way. FWIW, I think he was born in Hawaii, but his irritating, condescending 'rules are for the little people crap' just pisses me off.

THe filibuster has become a stand-in for a straight-up vote. In all but name you need 60 votes to pass stuff in the Senate today. With any majority in the House (217+ votes) and 60 senators and the white house, you have complete control of the government. The dems had that.
What they also had was a complete unwillingness to work with the Republicans in any way.
I'm confused.
The dems had a supermajority in both houses and they had an unwillingness to work with Republicans?
Is the answer 'Yes?' or is the answer 'Obviously they did not have a supermajority'.

Exactly, most of the liberals wanted universal single payer but they adopted the Republican plan in hopes that some Republicans would sign on board. They even weakened the bill making it worse multiple times because Republicans claimed if only this or that was weakened then they might vote for it but no sooner than the bill was weakened did the Republicans reject it and make demands for more parts being weakened. It was their game to water everything down and make worse.
The Republicans were determined from day one to destroy Obama and knew that a bipartisan health reform would make him look good. So they did everything they could to sabotage this. Since they knew they would look bad if they had no ideas of their own, they decided to whine about the fact that patients are able to sue doctors for malpractice if the doctors screw up. I WISH Obama had been completely unwilling to work with Republicans in any way.

Wasn't it a Republican politician who was trying to pass a law somewhere that meant cops could arbitrarily ask for proof of citizenship at any time?
I don't recall you voicing an objection then.

To be fair, malpractice costs are one of the major reasons healthcare costs are spiraling out of control. However I otherwise can't disagree with what you said there.

Why are we discussing birther nonsense in this thread?
Re the Health Care bill: The GOP had nothing to do with the state of the bill. All changes made to it were done in order to get support from so-called conservative Democrats.

Personally, like KH I keep all my documentation (copies) on me; I have a set in my car and a set at home. I've been pulled over once by a cop who didn't understand what all the documentation was and I had to go into court. So I took a day off work without pay, drove in, showed it all, and the ticket was dismissed.
Passing a law that would require me to provide documentation to any US official doesn't bother me. The onus should be on me to abide by the rules and the laws of the United States. The law is there for a reason, to protect American sovereignty.
That being said, Obama has considerable obligations to UPHOLD said laws as president of the United States. Instead of upholding them, he has undermined them. He doesn't respect the Constitution or the rule of law. In choosing not to supply the original document, (something many people have to do), demonstrates to me that he doesn't believe the law applies to him. He believes he is above the law.

DinoDoc, I always thought true as well, given that no Republican voted for the bill, and all of the media coverage over swing votes was about people like Bart Stupak and Ben Nelson. But what do we know? We're just simple conservatives who aren't as good with facts as liberals are. They're so smart, and so much of what they say just flies over our heads.
I'm sure they'll try their best to explain it to us, so that we can better understand the facts like they do.

You are pretty simple if you think that if no Republicans voted for it, then Obama must have not been interested in their votes. If Olympia Snowe didn't get any media coverage, then the media really is terrible.

This. I can't stress enough about conservative intellectual feebleness. It's good that Asher is around to remind us that our opinions make us less intelligent so that he can explain with his vast experience as a gay fake Canadian how everything we know about American politics is wrong, but it's not our fault--we are just dumber than he is. It can't be helped. It's the price of being conservative.

But I don't understand (probably because of my limited mental capacity). What changes to the bill were made just to get Olympia Snowe's vote? And why would Democrats, who are much smarter than I am, go through with those changes if they weren't going to get Olympia Snowe's vote anyway?

It seems like there were four months between the final bill and Snowe's announcement that she would vote no. As far as I can tell, this is a fact. (But I'm not sure, because we Simple Conservatives aren't too good with facts.)

So Oerdin, which Republicans were saying they might vote for the bill if only it were weakened? I'm sure you have a list of them, because you're really smart. Please help me. I'm ever so earnest and confused.
Also, while you're at it, you haven't answered my previous questions about your factual claims, here:
I hope I can learn more from you and be a better-informed member of the public.
