The Los Angeles Times story that relayed Romney's airplane remark to the world was based off a pool report written by the New York Times's Ashley Parker. When we asked Parker this morning whether it seemed as if Romney made the mark in jest, she left no doubt. "Romney was joking," she e-mailed. Parker told us that while the pool report didn't explicitly indicate that Romney was joking, it was self-evident that he was. "The pool report provided the full transcript of his comments on Ann's plane scare," she said, "and it was clear from the context that he was not being serious."

Obama Opens Up Big Lead In Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania

President Barack Obama is leading Mitt Romney by substantial margins in three key swing states, according to a Qunnipiac University/CBS/New York Times poll released Wednesday.

Obama leads 53 percent to 43 percent in Ohio. He leads 53 percent to 44 percent in Florida. He has a 54 percent to 42 percent lead in Pennsylvania, widely considered less competitive than the other two states.

The poll showed a substantial gender gap among voters. Obama leads by 25 points in Ohio among women, while Romney has an eight-point edge among men. Obama has a 21-point lead among women in Pennsylvania and is even among men.

Obama's approval rating is at 50 percent in Florida and Ohio, and 51 percent in Pennsylvania.

In the states' Senate races, all three incumbent Democratic senators -- Billl Nelson (Fla.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Bob Casey (Pa.) -- had the lead. Nelson and Brown are leading by double digits, and Casey has a six-point lead over challenger Tom Smith.
