Maybe, but what's to stop them from buying second-hand guns?

Another victory for the second amendment. A woman with a history of depression went out and bought a handgun, then shot her kids and then herself with it.

        Laws?

Of course, you can only reasonably control the black market by ensuring the supply is limited. Which is impossible in America now. You've made your bed...

In other news, several hundred thousand gun owners with a history of depression committed no violent acts today.

So your proposal is that no gun owner ever be allowed to sell their guns to someone else and if they do they will be held responsible for what those people do? Or they have to sell their used guns to some sort of licensed gun dealer who complies with the authorities?

So we should choose who gets to buy guns based on their political alignment? That doesn't just violate the second amendment, that violates the first amendment.

It's the glib manner in which you posted the thread that makes it inappropriate. See Elok's response to Guynemer.

Err...isn't this already a law? Do you not need a license to sell a firearm?

Ah, I forgot...the sanctity of the the first two amendments.

You're right - all anti-Semites and racists who were deemed to unstable by the military should be able to buy whatever firearms they want.

Who knows. Probably varies by state. I'm too lazy to find out but I guess I better should before I get lambasted for improper terminology or something. If it is a law, it's not very effective.

I was angry when I posted the thread. You should be, too -- but not at me.

I'm actually more angry that the lot of you don't even really care. You're focusing on the thread instead of the shooter and circumstances that enabled him.

You're transparent and, honestly, your callousness is infinitely more offensive to the victims of this crime than threads made in anger at the situation.

You can call the 2nd amendment anachronistic and you might even be right. But if the government can restrict something to specific people based solely on their political viewpoints, that's an infringement on free speech, plain and simple, and you can't call yourself a free country and do that.

Typically, guns do not enable freedom of speech. In fact, they frequently suppress freedom of speech.

I'm going to start a thread called "I like kittens" about how I sacrifice kittens to Satan. It's not a tasteless thread because look at the title I'd be using!
Slowwhand's thread was also a bit derailed by what appeared (I hope) to be a photoshopped picture of a female weightlifter.

I'm sure you're dripping with sympathy for the victims, Asher. That's why you made the thread title as provocative as possible. It's not because you're the #1 biggest troll on the entire board.
