I'd say that the core principle of the American system is that it opposes tyranny, in whatever form tyranny takes. Tyranny can be a result of government, of the majority, of fanaticism, etc. So our Constitution is laid out in such a way as to prevent these tyrannies -- checks and balances, Federalist divisions, the First Amendment.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

The constitution really is just a limitation on the power of government, nothing more. The Constitution limits government, but it doesn't limit it absolutely or arbitrarily. The point is to limit it to the extent that it can do the job it's required to do and nothing more. But that the founders felt the government was required to do something at all demonstrates that government isn't inherently evil; it's just a tool. Like any tool, it has its uses and misuses.

Really, it's the same argument gun rights advocates make. Guns aren't dangerous; the people that use them are. Guns are a tool that can be handled properly or improperly. Government is no different.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

Seriously. This.Originally posted by gribbler View PostI don't think anyone in 1777 knew that it was only temporary. That would have made "articles of confederation and perpetual union" a strange name to pick for it.Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Guns don't kill people- bullets kill people. That and massive blood loss, organ damage, oxygen starvation, and the heart stopping. Ban bullets.
